Hi
Is it true that you can get cars cheaper in December? If so is it better to buy before or just after Christmas. Which dates?

Also where is the best place to buy the car?

* from a dealer who sells new and second hand
*car supermarket
*or other??

I am after a Honda Jazz or Toyota Yaris. I have £3000 to spend on this.

Would appreceiate any advice

Thanks

  • Car's only really ever go down in value... So cars will be cheaper next month than they are this month. They will also be cheaper in Feb than they will be in Jan... etc etc...

Probably in between Christmas and New Year is a better time than most to go in and complete a purchase.

However this year will be different with a VAT rise I don't think dealers will be as desperate to sell.

Where is the best place to buy? Depends what you are after. Main dealers tend to have best selection of the cars in best condition, will give you a full test drive but you pay the price. Equally they tend to be younger cars.

Independent Dealer will have a mixed selection, probably give you a drive in it. Selection depends on where he gets the cars from, but they should be largely free of faults and history checked but you need to be sure!

Car Supermarket is often slightly more dodgy territory. It is not far off auctions. Prices are cheap, but your unlikely to get a test drive to find fault- some you might not get out because they are packed in- so you need to be a bit more savvy about what you are buying.

Auctions are well buyer beware. Bargains to be had, but you need to have some mechanical knowledge and have time to wait and visit and visit till the right car comes up.
  • I usually buy cars at auction in spring/summer, went last week and got a beauty. more than 1k below trade price. absolutely over the moon. did notice there were less tyre kickers there, it was pretty uncomfortable in sub-zero temperatures!
I would think its cheapest to buy cars just after the new reg comes out (ie making all older cars that little bit older). obv this depends on wat age ur buyin and i imagine it affects 1-3 yr old cars the most. These dates are in March and Sept i do believe.
Car supermarkets personally are worse than auctions. u pay WAAAAAAAAY more for the car and they are exactly the same as at auction. i guess its personal preference though.
  • look out for the gear boxes on the jazz, a lot are failing now ....
  • I would strongly advice avoiding ford. I have a 3 year 3 month old fiesta and the internal microprocessor has stopped working. Ford are currenty refusing to resolve this issue unless I pay them for diagnostic work!!!! ( this is despite me having had work done at my local independent garage and being able to provide them with a ford error code.) Very dodgy.
