My son has a sony vaio laptop, cost £900 new but now 16 months old so out of warantee. Last week it decided to pack up there is power in the lead so dont think this is the problem but there is no light showing on the laptop itself. Does anyone have any ideas whats wrong as i dont have a clue what to look for. I phoned sony and they asked me to hold the switch in for 20 seconds and nothing happened so said it would need to be returned to them, when i asked how much this would cost they quoted me £570 i couldnt beleive it. My son is only 13 and saved for a long time for this so you can imagine his disappointment. Any help would be much appreciated.

Disconnect the power and remove the battery completely. After about thirty seconds plug in the power lead and see if you get any life. If not try plugging the batery in again and try powering on with the power lead in or out. Other than this it sounds like something may have become unseated but try these steps first.Dig inside; inside is the fountain of good, and it will forever flow, if you will forever dig.0

consult your CAB; whilst a warranty is listed as 12 months, an "unreasonable" failure after this could and should be covered by the manufacturer. In the United Kingdom 200,000 people are bitten by dogs every year and some people will die as a result. Of those bitten, 70% are children... So the question has to be asked....... Has the time come to ban children?0

A common thing that happens with laptops is the power socket on the laptop falls apart the centre pin comes out or the whole socket comes away from the circuit board so have a look at the socket on the laptop and see if it looks like it should yea it should be an invertion of the plug on the cable.
If this is the case you can try to find some one with a soldering iron to open it up and resolder the connector back together and hope that it works. TV repair shops are usually ok as a last resort. I cant belive how Sony can tell you a price without even knowing what is wrong with it unless it is a known fault that it will die after 16 months and they know what part needs replacing. Or do they just send a replacement reconditioned laptop?
If it cant be fixed as above then CAB or small claims court something you spend £900 on should last more than 16 months.0 -
£570 quid? i have a sony Vaio and on their warranty site it says they charge £40 for taking a look at it and basic repairs... at least you could get them to see whats wrong and then try a local PC shop who will be much better.
Unfortunetly you wont be able to claim it as unreasonable failure - because its battery related (most likely) it is not included in the warranty, and this includes the unreasonable failure thing.
Some of the older Vaio's dont have the bypass circuit so you can use your laptop without a battery if its plugged into the mains. Try getting a new battery, or borrow one from someone.
Short of having it repaired or a new battery working, unfortunetly its just tough luck. Sorry0 -
I dont know if this will work but it might be worth a try.
I have had this work on an old Gericom laptop and An HP laptop.
Disconnect all power supplies and battery. Hold the power button in for 20 seconds. Put in battery and hold power button again for 20 seconds. Connect the mains and try to switch on.
It might actually turn on with the battery in if there is enough charge but it has something to do with reseting the power supply0 -
It happens sometimes due to a build up of static inside the laptop hence removing the battery and holding in the power button etc.
If the above mentioned techniques dont work it sounds like its a power supply related problem within the laptop and could be any number of problems from a simple board having worked itself loose depending how you lift the laptop and move it around or it could be that the power board has cracked with the heat inside it.
But that price is scandelous. £570 and they havnt even looked at it the robbing b*****ds:: No Links in signatures please - Edited by Forum Manager ::0
