Someone has stolen £3000 from my bank account

I'm gutted. I went to the bank today and did the usual, got a printout statement to see how much I had spent, so I could plan the Christmas pressies and food.
I couldn't believe my eyes when it said that I was at the limit of my overdraft!! There was a transaction showing to a Name Name of £2999 as of yesterday!! I'm surprised that the bank didn't call me, as i have never had the "privilege" of spending more than £200 at any one time from my account.
They called their fraud dept, and they pulled up the name and account number of the person whose account it has gone into- different bank. I don't know if it is okay to publish the man's name, so I won't, but needless to say I was so upset. I held it together until the man had finished the calls and said that they were going to investigate, but it looked like it was done online, then I burst into tears. I was so relieved, but still in shock.
I am so careful as it is, I don't know what to do. And am guessing that I will have to pay the overdraft charges while this gets sorted, its such a mess. It's been over ten years since i have needed an overdraft, and now I wish I didn't have the facility, as then the fraudster wouldn't have been able to get the money in the first place!!
I had to share, my OH is abroad for another two weeks on a course so am on my own feeling poo.

Don't worry about it, if you did not do the transaction, then you will get all the money back, along with any overdraft charges/interest that were incurred because of this. The thing with online transactions is that there is always an audit trail, so everything is recorded. This really helps to protect you.
But for now, ask the bank if you can have a temporary interest free overdraft extension, so that at least you have some money to spend while this is sorted out.
And keep on at the bank's fraud department if you don't hear anything back soon - I'd give them a week or so, and then chase them.
Best of luck with this.0 -

Someone stole £1500 out of my account on a cloned cash card (strangely this time last year, most be the time of year of the gits to appear) I was hysterical when I found out, I hadn't checked my account for a week as no need for money so they had taken it out in £50 lumps all over London. Bank was great, basically gave me unlimited overdraft while they sorted it, honoured all DD's due and 5 days later put the money back in my account. Its so upsetting when it happens to you, but you will get your money back.:rotfl:Ahahah got my signature removed for claiming MSE thought it was too boring :rotfl:0

Poor poor you, i dont think i would leave it a week id call into the bank or ring them moday to chase it up, id want a progress report. might be a good time to visit your bank manager and get to know them, also they can put a flag on your account so any unusual activity is suspended until they talk to you about it. ive had this done and the bank luckily refused a transaction for £15 in cyprus when id been out shopping in my local town. they rang me and asked if was me making the tranaction...when i confirmed it wasnt they cancelled my card as someone had my details.0

Depending upon the circumstances of the fraud - a temporary overdraft may not be a good thing - as they may return for a 2nd helping.
Very similar recent thread with virtually identical problem - so I'll not duplicate the advice :-

I'm with HSBC.
Have totally checked and rechecked my pc, for keyloggers and viruses, nada my friends.
Am now thinking, and praying it's not, identity fraud. I had my handbag stolen back in February, this year with all my cards details etc, I wonder if there may be a connection from that...I hope not!
I'm also wondering, what is to stop it happening again? It will be the same account number and sorting code that the bank will issue me?0
