2002 Ford Mondeo 1.8LX problem

3 weeks ago I picked up a MkIII '51' plate Mondeo 1.8lx and all has been fine I've loved driving it!

Yesterday though I was returning home when the engine developed a mis-fire. At first it was at low revs (less than 3000rpm) but, by the time I was 3 quarters of the way home, the mis-fire got a lot worse to the point I couldn't change up to 4th gear and was crawling along at apx 30mph. I say apx because the speedo was jumping around too!

The engine management light came on and it was a lot better first thing even though the engine management light was still on, when my father in law took it to the garage to change the plugs and leads.

When he tried driving it back to me tonight and switched the headlights on though the mis-fire re-appeared!

Any help would be greatly appreciated as we're at a loss.

I think it could be the coil and father in law thinks it might be an earthing problem...

  • Leads were prone to going duff on petrol Mondeo's.

There is no loss of lights and we know it's not the alternator

You need to get the car plugged into a gadget that diagnoses faults. Otherwise you are just guessing. A decent indy garage should charge around £60 inc VAT for this service. What you have now is a car in limp home mode!

Yeah we plugged it in and the fault says coil so we ordered one this morning, got it, fitted it and it was worse, took coil out and realised it was an OLD coil lol so getting another replacement sent out on monday morning. We have found that if you unplug either one of the headlights that the problem disappears completey

If people are with RAC they will diagnose for free. AND they have and can fit new coils and leads if you want them too. Not sure their prices are the lowest but for convenience you can't beat 'em.
