3,600 dpi interpolation this probably why they get bad reviews, as you do not know what the true resolution is. Like I said I have a canoscan 5000f, which does give reasonable results, but the slides have to be spotless. I find that I do have to spent time in PhotoShop afterwards removing spots and adjusting colour it is possible to get quite good results but it is time consuming.

These were the ones (plus the ION?) that I was looking at initially - but I can't find any good reviews - they all get 1 stars out of 5.

But i dont think these type of scanners will scan your parents wedding photo negatives, as they are more than likely a lot bigger than 35mm...

I too am after a flatbed to scan about 500 3x4 inch negatives, but cant seem to find one with good reviews(in my price bracket), altho the Epson P4490 doesnt seem too bad....this is about £160 at Epson, but have found it for around £110.

The scans i require neednt be first class, and "mediocre will do", because its something i havent got now, so anything is an improvement on that...and time isnt a factor either.....cost and the ability to scan the size i have are the only two concerns.

Having to spend time after scanning, isnt a problem either.

I bought the slide scanner from Firebox in the end (with 15% code off) and it's FAB!!! Have done LOADS of slides already! The only thing I would like to do is 'name' them as I scan them but this isn't the end of the world. The quality is much better than I ever imagined and it doesn't take oto long once you get into a rythm while watching TV!

My parents wedding slides are 35mm :)

We are going through similar at the moment although only have about 1k to do.

We looked at scanners, cheap ones are slow and low quality, fast/high quality ones are expensive and in both cases you have to do the post scan tidying yourself.

We found a place in Swindon that will scan then on a professional scanner for 15p a slide so that’s where ours are going in the new year.

I wonder if we can all pool together to try for a discount....lol

altho i think your solution is easier to find if yours are slides, as against my 4 inch negatives.

If however you are just looking for a quick and dirty way to get the slides onto screen, I'd probably go for the Canon Canoscan 8800F, it's around £150 new (here from Amazon), but you should be able to find bargains if you hunt around. Both links have good reviews.

Ive just read the review, can you tell me what size is "medium format" negatives....would you think my 3x4inch negatives would come into this category...

After hours of searching, I finally found a spec for the above from bhphotovideo.com , that mentions the transparancy window size...so it looks as if the 4490 will do the job for me.....Heres the spec, with the important 2.7 x 9.3" Scan area.

Some of the more expensive ones have a full size transparancy scan area, but for around £110 this will do for me...........unless anything better comes up of course.

    Perfection 4490 Photo Scanner

    • Flatbed Type
    • 4800 x 9600 Resolution
    • 3.4 D-max
    • 8.5 x 11.7" Scanning Area
    • 2.7 x 9.3" Transparency Scan Area
    • Includes Transparency Adapter

    • Batch Scanning Capacity

In your opinion, would this work on ordiinary negatives if i were to trim them to fit the input slot...have u any idea of the width of the slot, or the maximum size negative it will scan.

Yes, some the stuff I'm doing are negatives.. There is also an adaptor that you can put a length of negative into.
