seller wants to charge for carpets

    If she wants money for the carpets then I'd want to have a good look at them and get all big items of furniture moved so you can check they're not hiding any bad stains or holes.

    You could also get a carpet man in to give a verdict on the life expectancy of the carpets too.

    And to measure up for new ones.

    People who reckon they will want to rip and remove carpets on the day they move house must be mad!

    It's tiring and dirty work and will cost them money if they end up skipping them.

    I'd call their bluff and point out if they say they're taking the carpets and then don't you will want them to pay for them to be removed and disposed of plus any damage underneath put right from gripper rods.

    Well quite - if they're going to charge you £500 then you need to know what you're going to get for your money ;)

    It's going to take them hours to rip them out on moving day if they do go down that road, unless they move out beforehand :confused:

    That's still the case with New Build properties now, unless you arrange something with the builder or send your own people in beforehand, on the day of completion you will get bare concrete floors :rolleyes:

    Might not be that easy. The old laminates had to be glued together. The newer ones lock without glue, but pulling the pieces apart is likely to damage the locking bits enough that they can't be used again.

    I doubt it will work TBH.

    When I move Im taking the laminate floor. Not only because its actually my parents , but if I dont take it I wont have flooring! And it can always go in another room easily enough.

    How is it that the laminate floor belongs to your parents? And if you take it the buyer of your house won't have flooring.

    We took carpets with us when we moved - the place we moved into was a repo, and there was nothing down, so it went into the new house. It was a bit of a 'carpet jigsaw' for a few years in places, but we were skint, there was lots of building work to be done anyway, and we then bought new carpets as and when we could afford it. In fact, the previous owners left some very manky stair carpet that was so rank it stank the place out and was the first thing to go to the tip. Several weeks after the move they had the nerve to ring up and ask for payment for the carpet... Hollow laughter my end, then I directed them to the recycling centre.
    Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!

    Fact: a seller wants to get as many £££££ as possible out of the sale, just as the purchaser want to get the maximum s/he can for the minimum money.

    If the carpets ( or indeed other items) weren't specifically listed as being part of the deal you just have to negotiate, which is what festragatto has said s/he' ll do.
  • thanks to everyone who replied. We agreed on £150 for the carpets. We weren't brace enought to risk mocing into a house with no carpets a week before Christmas, although possibly we could have refused to pay and still had the carpets. £150 worth peace of mind though. Thanks again.

    Crikeys. Some people are so tight. The carpets won't fit another house will they? They are just annoyed that thay haven't had much use out of them before selling and now trying to get the money back from you.

    One place I bought, they wanted me to pay £50 for a 10 year old gas cooker (old fashioned type) and £200 for a washing machine that was 6 months old but one of those cheap brands that I wouldn't have bought myself. I said no and made them a lower offer but they wouldn't budge. Couple of days before i moved in, I went past the house and there was a house clearance place taking them away. Like they would have got a better price from them? Some people are just spiteful.

    My current house, the guy took ill day before we moved in. this entailed us moving to temporary accommodation for a month, moving house contents twice. then the seller wouldn't even meet our costs half way, saying we were being mean when he couldn't help being ill. Yes, that is true but not our fault either he was ill. Moving brings out the worst in people, I am afraid.
  • There's always the buyers perspective...controversial maybe. You agree to a sale then a week before the exchange you want £500 off as you don't want the curtains or carpets.......same point but a different angle
