Drivers and Zebra crossings

  • I walk through a bus station most days and even today a bus went straight through as i was about to cross. I would report them if I could be bothered as people like that should not be driving, and espeically not driving a large passenger bus.

Unfortunately quite a few zebra crossings are located in stupid places i.e. on a curve on the road and/or have overgrown trees and bushes covering the Belisha beacons. In addition due to residents complaints it's now common for one or both round Belisha beacons to have a black metal band round them and no other lights illuminating the crossing.

The crossing where people didn't stop until I was wearing white and green had the black bands plus over grown trees and bushes, no other lights illuminating the crossing and old street lights.

Yep but it doesn't explain why quite a few London councils are removing zebra crossings because drivers aren't stopping and replacing them with pelican crossings.

I agree completely, a few times I've driven half way over a crossing only to open my mouth in shock at NOT noticing someone waiting to cross. Its a horrid feeling. But sometimes a lot is going on, road junctions either side, poor visibility etc.

Yes some drivers are selfish, but some also do regret what happens when they are in the wrong.

I do pretty well with zebra crossings, they all seem to be in pretty good locations around here. What did shock me last weekend was when I was crossing with my husband and children at a pelican crossing (in broad daylight about 10am on Sunday, barely any traffic around) and a car which had stopped when the light went red, then decided it couldn't wait any longer and sped off literally just as we had passed it by enough for it to get past. I had a few choice words for the driver which unfortunately, children being present, I had to retain in my head for use in private

I'm not very good at succinct. Why say something in 10 words when 100 will do?

We have just had an extra safety feature added to a couple of zebra crossings in our town. They take the form of a "halo" of flashing lights that go around the orange beacon. They certainly show up well.
What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?
  • I hate it when they don't stop i usually give them a good stare as they go past or a nice little 1 fingered wave then i think go on stop your car ask me why i have gave the special wave or just called you a w**ker. I'm thinking about getting the part in the highway code about what to do at a zebra crossing printed on to some paper take a few copies with me and glue it onto their windscreen (for the ones that don't stop at crossings in car parks). Rant over.

I'd glue it back on your face

I cant see how you could miss soemone stood at a crossing, ok so they may be wearing a dark coloured coat but you should be driving at a reasonable speed to notice a person is stood at the crossing, theres lights where the crossing is so you should be able to see a person there

Twice I've chased drivers who've run straight through a pelican crossing when the light was at red, causing me to jump out of their path. The next one I chase and catch is going to have to contend with me yanking open their door and removing their keys. ;)

That is true, however what I tend to have trouble with, is they put in a herd of new Zebra's around here, and people tend to just walk straight ahead, then turn onto them with little or now warning  (the zebra's are really well lit, with the white stripes on the poll being lit, very effective at illuminating the ends of the crossing).

However there are some older ones around here that are really badly lit, or even have dead/broken lighting in which case it can be very hard to see someone wearing dark clothing waiting at the crossing.

I slow down when I approach a crossing, but must say I do get annoyed when people stand by crossings with no intention of actually crossing the road. When i'm walking and have to pass a crossing, I tend to stay as far away from it as possible if I don't plan to use it.
