hi,
we've got an emachine, and the dvd drive would not play films - it would show the trailer, but for the main film the screen would have horizontal lines across it - in colour and moving - but no 'real' picture. Replaced the dvd drive - and the new one is just the same!! These are proper dvd's not copied ones - although Bridget Jones works properly Chicago and all the others we've tried don't ... any ideas...

what Region are the discs that won't play???
that sounds like drm to me, try a program like AnyDVD (21day free trial) and see if that resolves it

I second AnyDVD what it does is to bypass any region blocks on the DVD, by intercepting the data between the DVD and your player.
Incidentally, if you want a good DVD player, I can recommend CyberLink's PowerDVD. You can buy copies really cheaply, even the previous version is very good, and I've seen it for less than a few pounds on froogle.
Cheers and take care.

Hi
You need a dvd decoder to play dvd's.
Have a look here, at the K-Lite Codec pack.

Hope this helps0 -
thanks for all your advice - which I will be taking once I get the computer linked up with a network....
This computer is the host - and we've got a hub - and the computer (with the dvd player) is downstairs ... it is connected to the internet - but obviously not properly. It seems happy with the IP address but the gateway is not connected - and I've tried re-setting it as per other advice, but I think I've messed everything up.
If I do 'ping' etc the first set of results is ok ... but then it says:
Tunnel adapter teredo tunnelling pseudo-interface:
connections specific DNS suffix : (this is blank)
IP address fe80: :5445:etc
default gateway: (this is blank)
Tunned adapter teredo tunnelling pseudo-interface:
repeated as above!!
Any ideas of what the heck it is I've interfered with?Bern :j0 -

i prefer to download the demo from the website and install it, then use a dvd frontend player like windows media, media player classic, zoom player pro(notfree), and the demo filters (which are the same as retail)0
