international visitor car insurance

Hi guys,
I'm a 24yr old Australian, with a full Aussie licence, in the UK for 3 months. I'd planned to borrow the car of a friend(a 37yr old UK national with full UK Licence) while I was here to see the sights, and have now found out it would cost £1900 to add me to his insurance!! Arrggghhh!! Does anyone know of a more affordable way to get insured while I am here?! I've looked at hundreds of sights, but they all seem to suggest I have to be a resident. I've considered hiring, but that's likely to be just as expensive
. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

All UK insurers I have come accross require you to be permenantly resident in the UK.
Not much help. Sorry! Are you intending on using it only occasionaly or all the time? If only occasionaly, then surely a mix of public transport and rentals should sort you out.0 -
Hi Dogbot,
Thanks for your (unfortunately, not too helpful!) feedback. It just seems bizarre that there is no way for a visitor to be permitted to drive, even as an additional driver, when the DVLA offer things like the International Drivers Permit! I thought it might be difficult, but never imagined it would be impossible
. I was planning to travel for almost the full three months; because I have friends all over the country- accomodation costs would be low, allowing me more £ to see the sights, but I guess I'll just have to drop it back to a month or so
& make use of public transport.
Anyway, thanks for your time.0 -
Hi
Try Hertsinsurance.com.
They have policies for Australian visitors.
HucksterThe comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.0 -
