M4 Newport traffic (mornings)

I need to go over the bridge early in the morning, but I was going to go this morning (Friday) I hit the traffic at 7:30 then got onto M4 and was near J30 at 08:10 hit another wall of traffic, I happened to come off to go to ASDA (BIG mistake), I ended up going through to old St Mellons to get to the A48 where I hit another ridiculous queue on the A48 I figured the A48 might be moving at least. it wasn't! So I U turned and went back to Eastern Avenue to head North BIG mistake as I was now stuck in traffic with nowhere to go (now that I had decided to just give up and go home), eventually got to J28 by 9am and decided to go home and try tommorrow (Saturday) It was now too late for me to get where I was going to go by the time that I wanted to be there.

So, it may be better on a Saturday anyway, but what time in the morning is the traffic not going to be ridiculous (crawling or stationary) on this M4 stretch between Cardiff and Newport?

I could do this route, but will there be any need on a Saturday?

That area of M4 is a nightmare at the moment due to the roadworks. I would guess Saturday is a better bet, at least there are not the same rush hours. However you'll have a lot of people wandering around doing xmas shopping.

Your alternative route is probably not a bad idea if you want to be surer but no need for the second half, if you join M4 at J29 (Tredegar House) that is the end of queues so you should be okay from there on. (Don't quote me on this...!)

I go that route most mornings - starts getting really busy at 7.15, if I can't leave by 7.15 I take the back roads (the ones you said)

On a Saturday however it's not too bad, until 8ish
  • i travel from cwmbran to cardiff and go down Malpas Road on at 26, off at 28, and towards old st mellons BUT take a left down past LG and towards the PARC golf club, through the lanes and turn right, you'll go past Peterstone golf course etc all the way to the industrial area, keep following that in a straight line over the multiple roundabout and you hit the bay or turn off before Tesco Pengam green and go onto Newport Road - now if its 7:30 its not too bad on the motorway.

If i leave Cwmbran at 7:30 i am in work at 8am latest!! - if i leave Cwmrban at 8am i dont get to work until 9 or just after.

It really does make all the difference those extra 15 - 20 mins. I have also left my house at 9am before and got to work at 9:25 so i would say there is an hour window that you dont want to hit

hope this helps - if not sorry but thought i'd have a go :)
