Hi,
This is still all the planning stage! Looking into the idea of renting a room Monday to Friday so I can have the weekend to myself. Has anyone used the above site or can anyone recommend another site and has anyone got any tips??
Many Thanks

Just started to look at it, but from the other side - i.e. I'm going to be looking for somewhere to stay Monday to Friday in the new year.
In theory though, it's an excellent concept - other websites that provide a similar service are: fivenights.com and spareroom.co.uk . The latter isn't specifically for weekday lodging but there's the ability to specify in your ad and for potential lodgers to narrow their search down accordingly.0 -
Cheers, so "from the other side" what are you looking for in a place? What are the important things to you?0

I’ve never ‘lodged’ before, so it’s all a bit new to me. I know that it’s not going to be my ‘home’ and that I am going to need to live by the owners rules but if an advert is cold and clinical then it’s going to turn me right off. I don’t want to be made to feel that I’m only there to help pay the mortgage but should be making myself scarce. On the other hand, a room with a sofa and a TV in it would mean that I wouldn’t have to impose by sitting in the living room making smalltalk every evening.
Another nice thing I’ve noticed most places offer, is the providing and changing of linen every fortnight. I would hate to have to take sheets home at the weekend to wash them and bring them back!0 -
I've stayed in B&Bs Mon-Fri before, as well as a Mon-Fri arrangement at the house of somebody I vaguely knew.
I'd want to know:
- is there off road parking
- are there any kids, animals at the house
- is there the potential to be able to keep some stuff there over the weekend from week to week (not high priority, but could be nice if there were a small drawer for toiletries/towel/dressing gown to be kept rather than always lugging that one more bag in/out of the car.
- is there wifi?
I've tended to work on 3-month and 6-month contracts, 200 miles from home.
I stayed in one "B&B" one night when my previous B&B was flooded out in the night (floods of 2001 in Glos) and the room was clearly normally a child's bedroom - even all the drawers were full of their stuff. The breakfast arrangement was "help yourself within our scruffy kitchen to toast/coffee". It was all most peculiar.0 -
I have tried to advertise on this site - the level of support is terrible - emails to the site generally bounce and on the odd time they do get through expect to wait at least a week for a response. I have been trying to get a refund for weeks now but to no avail. AVOID FIVENIGHTS AT ALL COST.0

Again from the other side of things I'd agree with the sort of things mentioned above, and also try not to come across too neurotic about the arrangement.
It's a funny arrangement to have, born out of necessity, but laying it on thick in the ad with rules is likely to put people off. Everyone posting these ads appears to be "laidback" - listing house rules in the next sentence kinda undermines the sentiment.
Avoid sounding as though you think you're doing them a favour - if you don't think its mutually beneficial then don't do it.
If it works out you get a nice tax free income and maybe someone to have a beer with.0 -
Freind of mine did it for three years with same Monday to Friday lodger - he lived elsewhere with his family, worked in a big international company at local offices, left before friend got up every morning, came home about 9, ate at work or out all the time - and was very nice person as well. So worked very smoothly, both people happy and ended when guy moved off to another location for work. He happened to be someone who needed very little apart from a very nice room in the right location so he could walk to work, heaps cheaper than hotels and b and b's.
If you do it I would recommend house rules - nothing more annoying than assuming someone will do/not do something if you haven't discussed it at the outset. Prevents unnecessary misunderstandings and bad feelings.0 -
Im considering renting from this site, after being offered a short term contract in London; and seeing how dear normal rents are! Plus, with a partner in Birmingham, it makes sense. However, does anyone think it would be a problem if my girlfriend came and stayed once every fortnight or so...!?0

Then why not put up your own ad on the site and put this in as well. I don't see why that's not workable.0
