Media pimped homes for sale - monitor thread

Mods, please let this thread stay this forum section. I want to monitor increases / decreases to the media-featured homes below, so as to track outcomes, get an insight into how the economy is faring, and gauge the health of the market in the areas covered in each story.
It is too difficult to track without having a thread to organise articles and associated links on. I've already forgotten so many other media articles giving attention to certain homes, the linked articles and the listing info for sale.
This isn't my own thread.. anyone is free to add the details of any media featured property of interest to it, in order to monitor or discuss.

TV entertainer Bobby Davro can heave a sigh of relief after selling his 8,000sq ft Surrey mansion for £4.2 million through Curchods. On the market since last autumn, it follows a sad period during which his marriage to former Page 3 girl Trudi Jameson (mother of his three daughters, Brittany, Tierney and Marnie) collapsed and he suffered a nervous breakdown.
The Staines-raised, Olympic runner’s son personally designed the six-bedroom neo-classical property on the Burwood Park estate near Walton-on-Thames. Last January he was one of the wobbliest contestants in ITV1’s Dancing On Ice.

Quick reference info:
This is just as well because financially the house is far less sleek and assured than its appearance. It was put on the market in May for £1.895million with Paramount Properties, but Charlie has had to reduce the price three times in whopping £100,000 increments - the most recent of which was just two weeks ago, when she also engaged estate agents John D. Wood. She has so far had an offer of £1.55million, which she is considering.

Daily Mail: As the number of empty shops in Britain soars, why are local councils turning down bids to turn them into homes?
23rd November 2009

Quick reference info:
After all, the pretty Georgian street was almost exclusively residential, and the shop, which had last been used as a homeopath's consulting rooms and dispensary, had been empty for almost a decade when they bought it two years ago, the windows obscured by faded brown paper.
Sadly, Evans has been treated for cancer recently and is having to reduce his workload. As a result, the couple have now put the house on the market through Knight Frank (020 7483 8349) with a price of £3.175 million.

"Roseleigh" Sevenoaks Road Pratts Bottom Orpington Kent BR6 7SE

Quick reference info:
Christina and Kyri Karoulla, who bought and demolished a run-down bungalow in the South London suburb of Bromley and replaced it with a luxurious five-bedroom house, plead guilty on both counts after their budget doubled and the project took six years compared with the two it should have taken.
While they have succeeded in creating a sumptuous family home, complete with heated swimming pool, the stress of the project - and the huge debt the pair racked up - has led to arguments. They have since split up.
Every penny they have is tied up in the house and they owe almost £700,000 to their bank, which wants its money back and has ordered them to put the house on the market.
In spite of sleepless nights in rented accommodation nearby fretting over their debts, if they can sell at the £1.2million asking price, they will still make some money.

Daily Mail: Bobby Davro: My houses are not just bricks and mortar... they are the foundations of my new life
16th November 2009

Quick reference info:
Fortunately the basic structure of the house had been done and done very well but the interiors weren't finished so we had to try to borrow another £200,000,' says Bobby.
'By then banks were very reluctant to lend at all but we managed to persuade them. We then had to find new contractors to finish the job. It set us back by about four months.
'I felt very let down by the builder. I think that was the worst time. However, the only sleepless nights I had were after we'd laid the lawn. We were in a bit of a rush and we then had two solid weeks of blazing sun and a lot of it got burnt.' Bobby candidly admits that his and Graeme's timing might not have been ideal. They bought before the slump and are now selling during it - 'but nobody foresaw it and it all happened so quickly'. They had planned to ask £4.5million but think the new price is more realistic.

Maybe she will, maybe she won't. Bought in 2007 at £55K (with 40% of that paid). She's trying to sell on her obligation and the apartment hasn't even been fully built yet. Ah bless, she wants to sell so she can build an extension on her Glasgow home. The Glasgow-Dubai Connection.
I've got little knowledge of Dubai... type of place I'd avoid even visiting when you can be imprisoned for carrying prescription drugs, never mind having a property there, with maintenance charges and so on.
The Sunday Times: Jamie Theakston: Leaving the past behind
The TV and radio presenter fell for this Tudor house as a child, and bought it once his career took off. So why sell up?
November 29, 2009Theakston says he wants to sell Wings Place — priced at £2m — to buy a “family house” instead. But isn’t the detached manor house, with its four bedrooms and large garden, the perfect place to bring up kids — especially since Theakston’s parents live nearby?
It seems there’s another reason (and not just the six-figure profit he is set to pocket). The couple have just finished an 18-month refurbishment of their main home, a Notting Hill townhouse they bought three years ago. It is in a completely different style: “modern and eclectic”. They have thoroughly enjoyed the experience but have what Mrs T calls a severe case of “itchy feet”.

THE ANCIENT MANOR HOUSE. THE BANK | BARNARD CASTLE | COUNTY DURHAM | DL12 8PN
Quick reference info:'Barnard Castle is beautiful - there is so much history here. I'll be sad to leave,' says Miriam. 'It is a natural gateway to the Pennines, so it's a magnet for tourists who like to mix old architecture and historic sights with good walking holidays.
'But we travel to London a lot so it has become inconvenient for us to live here. The nearest train station is half an hour away in Darlington and we are off the beaten track. In some ways that adds to the appeal, but it also adds long hours to my journeys.'
But Miriam and Nigel now face a new problem - the sharp North-South divide when it comes to the recovery of the property market.
In the North, prices remain low, but London and the South are seeing values nudge back up as pent-up demand meets a shortage in available stock.Key Facts

Daily Mail: The 'biggest new-build in the South East' - for £4.5million
08th September 2009
Quick reference info. (sick)'It cost me £3.25million to build and sits on four acres of land I have owned since the Seventies. If it had been built by a developer at £300 per sq ft, the build would have cost £4.8million without the land, so I felt the right asking price was about £5million. But thanks to the recession I haven't had any takers.''It was a gamble,' he says. 'Wealthy buyers were looking for large houses in this area and I thought I could cash in on that trend.'
The nine-bedroom home is built to luxury standards. It is priced £5million including furniture and £4.5million without.

Daily Mail: Planners will let my office become a townhouse... but banks won't lend against it
08th September 2009
Quick reference info:Suzanne Noble has buyers lined up for her old workplace, but they can't get a mortgage.
For the past 18 months Suzanne Noble has been trying in vain to sell her former office building - a converted Victorian coach house in a fashionable North London suburb and which has planning permission to be turned into a chic three-bedroom house.
Neither the price tag of £550,000 nor the estimated £170,000 cost of conversion has deterred would-be buyers, particularly in Tufnell Park where Victorian terrace houses fetch well over £750,000.

Daily Mail: £5.5m Poole house that was built in a Frankfurt warehouse
06th September 2009
Quick reference info: Former nightclub boss. My guess, a long-wave boom, cold-war inflation, credit-expansion house price wealth rider. Why a 70 yo buy/build such young-playboy palace, to sell so soon after build complete? Looks like he enjoyed his HPI projections, formerly expecting a £6.5m sale. Appears to be purely a super-luxury development project for resale HPI profit - as he already has his own house in the area. However, prices are down, and a year ago, while the six-bedroom house was still on the drawing board, Weston-Edwards hoped it might fetch £6.5million.
'Now, I know that £5.5 million is a much fairer price,' says the 70-year-old.From signing the contract to putting the roof on took two months. We had a traditional German topping-out ceremony and stuck a tree on the roof and drank schnapps,' says Weston-Edwards, who lives half-a-mile away with his wife Ann in a house he built 20 years ago.

Daily Mail: Right time to liquidate our assets: Couple sell Victorian water tower (with 157 steps) that became a unique family home
12th November 2009By that time the water tower, built in 1897, had been put up for auction. Robert, himself a builder, left an offer with the auctioneer and - for £115,000 - was soon the owner of the Victorian pile containing eight floors and standing at 137ft tall.
Today, after a £300,000 renovation, the building has five bedrooms, a vast kitchen takes up a floor, as does the bathroom with free-standing bath, and walk-through shower with his and hers cascades. He bought the tower five years ago and it took nine months for planning consent.

And then, when the the gloss wears off and the boom time ends, try selling the f*cker.
