Thomas Cook Charged Debit card buying currency

Options
hi

i bought some euros from Thomas Cook. as there was a cashpoint next door and i was with a friend also buying euros we asked if there was any charge for paying with a debit card as we would either a)go and get cash as there is a cash point 2 shops away, or b) if we really couldnt be bothered to go outside, make a single transaction between us. (we would have done a as we did not have any time constraints)

we were told no charges on getting the cash with the debit cards, so we both bought our euros. later on we found we both had charges of £3.50 on our accounts for getting the cash. I complained stating the above facts..

I can confirm that as long you used a debit card you should not have been charged, there is only a charge made when using credit cards. Therefore if you have been charged incorrectly I would advise you to re-visit the branch for a refund.

i said did not want to take a £6 each way taxi to get this refund

they replied:
'With regard to the charges made on your booking, I have investigated this with our Hove store and they have advised me that this charge was not made by Thomas Cook but by your bank. I can understand you are unhappy that you were advised of this charge before, however we are not able to see charges made by your own bank and I can only suggest you take it up with them.'

(and they should have said 'not advised')

my complaint is that they should reasonably know that there would be a charge.... what can i do? i was thinking that maybe the financial ombudsman?
Willow: I knew it, I knew it, well not in the sense of having the slightest idea, but I knew there was something I didn't know!

Why should they reasonably know your banks terms and conditions.

Normallly speaking banks see this as a cash disbursement, most debit cards don't charge for these although some banks do. Blame Mr Lewis and his campaign which resulted in banks finding new ways to screw us.

As for the ombudsman. Not a hope in hell, Its no one but your fault that you didnt know your terms and conditions.
  • It's not down to Thomas Cook to know the individual charges that any bank might make - it is your responsibility as the account holder to know the terms of your account, sorry! Maybe you should try speaking with your bank to recoup them....although I would guess that they will point you to the terms that describes the charge (albeit in tiny writing) that you agreed to.
