It sounds to me as if the soliticitor has got into trouble and is trying to get your BIL 'off the record' (hence the unofficial phone number) to accept the offer so the whole case can be pushed under the carpet.
I'm afraid that is where my line of thinking was going too.
Thankyou so much to all who responded here. The matter has been settled out of court under the guidance of the Q.C involved. Although my BiL was not overwhelmed with the offer he can now put it to bed and get on with his life. To all you would be personal injury claimants out there think hard before proceeding because in my BiLs' case everyone involved in his case made some sort of fee as a result of his injuries....and it wasn't settled quickly 3and a half years.I hope he now can put this behind him.
Glad to hear matters are sorted. Some cases do take a long time as insurers wait for a medical condition to stabilise before settling. If they went for a quick early settlement and the situation deterioted, they would be heavily criticised.
You are right about the fees though. Last figures I saw suggested that every £1000 in compensation paid generated a further £400 in fees to medical experts and solicitors etc.
