Hi going through the process of setting up new laptop so it's all ready when my daughter unwraps in Christmas day but never used vista before and I want to remove Norton and put on AVG but I've gone into the control panel and can't find an 'add and remove' software tab I'm confused. Can someone tell me which tab and the exact name of it I should use to remove software please. The whole set up is very different to what I'm used to on xp and I have only a few hours to sort it out and wrap it before my daughter comes home. All help is very welcome thank you.

Programs and Features is where you need to look.
AVG isn't very good, you should strongly consider Microsof Security Essentials, Avast or Avira instead. All are free.0 -
Wow thanks have found it, I'm used to AVG and I use a malware program and ccleaner too it's all worked on my pc so hoping will be fine on laptop. Thanks again x

As usual the previous poster has not answered your question and is simply giving their unqualified option.
You need to use the Norton removal tool here before trying to install an alternative anti-virus.
Read this article here before deciding what to install.
If you are happy using AVG then continue as it's fine! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Commodo is nice free firewall/av for Vista/7

ccleaner too
Good choice, you're daughter will be much happier with the laptop if you can remove the junk that gets pre-installed by the manufacturer!
espresso, while you're quite correct in linking to the Norton removal tool (which slipped my mind
), I'm not with you on the outright dismissal of the recommendations for alternative anti virus products. AVG has poorer detection rates and is rather heavy on the resources compared to other products, which will more than likely hamper the power of the laptop.
In any case it's the OP's call, but extra information can't do anyone any harm.0 -
Hi OP,
Did you a free (ish) upgrade option to Windows 7?
If so it would be worth doing the upgrade now. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

It's simply not true that AVG is rather heavy on resources and what is actually known about the detection rates of M$ security essentials that seems to be the latest in vogue program that people are pushing? From what I've seen it's not a very good solution at all e.g. it simply deletes users files without giving them any choice.
If the OP is perfectly happy and familiar using AVG, the latest version is a definite improvement over previous version.
Far too many on here do not answer the actual question and just give their own recommendations. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Quite agree 'espresso' AVG is very good, I have never had a problem with it! It was only the old 7.5 version that was rubbish and slow!
You can get the 9.0 Internet Security version on amazon for about £10

OP if you could list the model of your Daughter's new toy we can let you know if you qualify for the Free+P&P windows 7 upgrade. It would very much be worth the £15-£20PP if it does.
As far as Antivirus goes the debate rages on. Go with what you know, none are perfect and just use common sense on what you click on, link to or download. (My car has seatbelts and an airbag but it's still safer not to hit a wall
