Need Help Getting Cheaper Insurance, 19 Year Old Driver

I've recently purchased a car, which is an 05 plate 1.4 Renault Clio, and have been looking all over the place for car insurance. However the quotes I've been getting seem ridiculous even for someone of my age, with the cheapest being around £3500-£4000. I've heard friends tell me that is really high for a car of my size, and also that some of them pay around £80 a month on there insurance, and this coming from someone younger than myself.
I've looked at the majority of comparison sites and also tried going on many insurance companies sites directly with no lower quotes.
Any advice would be highly appreciated.
Also I was wondering if I could possibly get a cheaper quote by phoning insurance companies rather than trying to do it online?
Thanks Adam

Online is normally cheaper - the rather painful lesson that you should learn here is
'Get insurance quotes BEFORE you buy the car'0 -
as above. if under 20 or 21, aim for 1.1 or 1.0 ltr, maybe a 1.2.
If you have no past experience/a year of your own NCD then the price will be higher. If you are male rather than female, it will be much higher. If you live in a crapy area or urban area then it will be higher.
Try adding a parent with a clean driving record as a named driver, idealy mum.
Try a higher excess and opting for some advanced driving courses such as IAM, though both have their obvious disadvantages.0 -
I did actually get car insurance quotes before I purchased the car, but now that I've gone to get quotes again they've either increased in price, or, take Quinn Direct for example who gave me the cheapest quote when I checked before purchasing the car, they can't seem to be able to quote me anymore, even though my details are exactly the same0

The market is hardening at the moment and insurers are getting better at segmenting their pricing - they have been hit worse by an influx of business they never really wanted now they are exposed to price comparison websites.
It seems odd that quinn won't quote, since they usualy go for young business.
You are best to try Tesco, Direct Line, Co-op direct, aviva as well as some brokers who advertise on things like pistonheads and max power. These are the people that others on here seem to have been reporting as being lower priced for young driver business.
You can, of course, also consider a more restrictive policy like MoreThan drive time (you will have to try calling More Than as their website seems to have dissapeared - not sure if it has been pulled), Coverbox, i-Kube.0 -
Thankyou for recommending those, I have been looking at cover box policies, although the only problem with those is that I work as a Waiter and generally finish work at around 11pm, so that creates a problem for me.
Also I've tried Tesco and these don't seem to be able to quote me either, although I'm not sure if thats just online or not being able to quote me at all.
I will try those other companies you recommended
Thanks

I would not say I recommend AVIVA, but if they give you a decent price then it is worth the risk for a few years untill your premiums come down!
Make sure you check the stance wrt cancelation charges etc for any brokers especialy if there is a chance of you changing something soon - e.g. going off to uni or changing jobs.
Good luck.0 -
Aviva have quoted me at around £5000
And either insurance companies which are supposed to do cheaper insurance for younger/new drivers have been quoting me as high as £14,000.
I understand that my premiums will be high as I'm a new driver, male, and my car doesn't really have a tiny engine, but I can't understand why I'm being quoted so much.0 -

True, but there's high, and then there's just down right ridiuclous etc over £50000

I suspect your job may also be contributing to the higher premiums - I'm sure I read somewhere that premiums are higher for those in hospitality - look at the car insurance job tweaking tool.in the car insurance section of this site. (Sorry as a new user I cannot post a link)0
