Help, new home who shall I chose

Hello everyone.

I have just signed a tenancy on a very small one bedroom bungalow. Need to sort out my gas and electricity. The previous tennant was with EON for electricity and British Gas. Now it would be easy to just phone them and get reconnected but I spoke to an EON rep in the local shopping centre and his quote was way higher than that for my current 3 bedroom semi with Scottish Power for both.

The bungalow (which I wont be moving into till January) has gas central heating, no gas fire and no gas cooker yet.

I have been on a comparison site but i dont have anything to compare so dont know who to choose. Ebico seems to be the cheapest for a deal that suits me.

I need advice - can anyone help
Most energy providers seem to have a bit a bad reputation.

You will have to go with the existing suppliers on a 'deemed contract'. Read the meters on the first day, ring Eon/ BG and ask to be put on a cheaper tariff than 'standard', read the meters again after a month and feed your figures into a price comparison site - you can start the switch as soon as your accounts with Eon/ BG are set up but it will take at least a month to finalise.

Fire Fox is spot on :T You must inform the current suppliers of the property when you first move in, E.ON will need the date you took responsibility of the property, your name and meter readings.

This is also a good time to ask E.ON about tariffs, you say the property has electricity only with E.ON, there are tariffs available for this so check them out on the website or on a comparison site.

Once you have your accounts opened, you could look around and get the best deal for your needs.

    Hope this helps.

  • thank you to those who have replied. I have since contacted Eon who say they do the gas but british gas do the electricity. I have contacted BG who say they have only just taken over (prior to my tenancy) and all the paperwork hasnt been finalised. They are going to phone me in a week. Eon are going to carry on and have persuaded me that to get gas from them and they will sort it out with BG. Eon promised that if I want to change to a better or cheaper supplier then I only have to give 28 days notice, and no leaving fee etc. It all gets so confusing.

I would appreciate if Eon's rep would confirm that there is no leaving fee.

You have been misinformed. E-on will charge you up to 21% extra on your final bill if you want to switch away from them (unless you are on their standard tariffs in which case you will be paying 21% extra (or more) before you change again as well.)

    Hi harrased-gf,

You won't be charged fee for leaving unless you have chosen a tariff with a termination fee, what tariff are you on?

It takes around 4-6 weeks to change supplier, if you do wish to change away from E.ON, all you need to do is apply to your preferred supplier who will arrange to take over the supply.

Just be aware that E.ON don't give discount on final bills.
