I need my birth certificate asap. I ordered it on line and they have said there is a delay!!!
Is there somewhere in london I can go to get it! I was not registered in London but Norfolk, but I wandered if I could get one in london.
Thanks

Even if you go into the Family Records Centre in Islington, they won't give it to you on the spot; you can choose to have it posted to you or return to collect it. I've ordered stuff from them for my family genealogy and it usually takes around 10 days unfortunately. I don't know any way of getting it instantly. The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.0

Have you ordered it from the General Register Office or the area where you were born?
I have to order certificates at work from various locations and they never take more than a few days to come through. I always order from the local authority in which the birth was registered.
Here's the info for Norfolk. http://www.norfolk.gov.uk/consumption/idcplg?IdcService=SS_GET_PAGE&ssDocName=NCC041904&ssSourceNodeId=&ssTargetNodeId=54
At the bottom of the page is a link to the register offices in the county.0 -
As far as I'm aware the only way to get birth/marriage/death certificates on the spot is to attend the area register office where the event took place. When my SIL died 2 years ago, my brother couldn't find their respective birth certificates or their marriage certificate. With 3 children to care for he needed to sort things out quickly and various relatives ( me included )were despatched to the various offices. We all managed to obtain our designated certificate with only minimal (30 mins approx) waiting times. Is there anyone near the original office who could go for you?You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0

My husband needed a copy of his birth certificate when we were married. He rang the office in the area where he was born and they told him the details he needed and the cost, he sent them a cheque and the details and got the certificate back a few days later.0

If you get in touch with the register office where you were registered when born they will tell you cost and where to send cheque and will send you a copy as soon as they receive cheque. Better still if you have family or friends in the town they can go in and get it and post out to same day.
Hope this is of help.0 -
The local registry offices have always been by far the quickest rather than using the central London office in my experience.
They do vary in cost and time but never had to wait any significant period for them. All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers
