Hi Guys,

I'm considering buying either:-

Audi 1.6 TDCi SE Sportback
Audi 1.6 TDCI Sport Sportback
VW Golf 1.6 TDCI SE

howver i can't decide whihc one to go for and which one sis good value for money. i've read on a forum that if you spec the VW Golf to the equivalnt Audi, the saving is only around £500 so seem liek worth gogi for the Audi but i find it hard to cpompare the Audi and the Golf specs as they don't seem to list like for like... there seems to be losts that Audi has that Golf doesnt' and visa versa...

What woudl you guys recommend?

not considering purchaasing yet, thinking about later part of next year maybe. ad yes i know i'll have to pay the extar 2.5% VAt but not alot i can do about it......

Also consdeig getting a newly new one of the above with say 10, 20 miles n the clock etc but doesn't see to be many about...

Thanks in advance!

Kevin

In general I prefer Audis over VW.
Never owned either though so I can't really quantify it.

Personally, I don't think either represent good value for money. If you follow the hierarchy for VAG cars: Skoda -> Seat -> VW -> Audi, you soon get to appreciate VFM when you see "equivalent" model Skodas/Seats much cheaper than their VW/Audi counterparts.

So in my opinion you don't really look at VW/Audi if you really want overall value for money. You'd go for them if they appeal to you, they offer the right kind of drive/comfort you're looking for.

Between those options, the most important thing you can do is obviously test drive each - you may find you drive one and instantly thing "wow". Likewise you may be disappointed - decision made! Also don't let it boil down to a "spec count" - i.e. this one has 20 items listed on the spec, compare to 18 items for the other - think about what spec items would actually benefit/interest you.

Good advice, VW/Audi are just Seats and Skodas but they fleece you £1K+ for the badges..... Choose carefully- and check do you definitely need a diesel too for mileage and regular high speed operation.

    Hi,

Thanks for all your comentsyeah i know VAg made the skoda and seat but i prefer the look of either the golf or the Audi.

Thanks motoringadvisor for your comments, I am afte a car that can comfortable carry 5 adults around and also be just as happy with 1 or 2 peopel in it. I've goen for the diesel as i liek the fuel economy they offer, i currently hve a 06 Focus and im currently averaging filling it up once a month which is perfect compared to my other car whcih i was filing up every 1 and ahalf weeks :) I also wanted the 1.6 TDCi engine as thsi falls into the cheaper car tax bracket of just £35! compared to my £120 at the moment.

i tend to do a mix of driving, some long tuns such as 2 - 3 hours driving on mostly motorway/A roads but i also do some local town driving for say 5 - 20 minutes depending where i am going.

Interesting view ot he VW/Audi, i heard of a forum that when you spec the gofl to the audi, the difference is like £500? i was comparign the item count for the golf and the audi, more tryign to see which is included in both cars and what the gofl has extra to teh audi and visa versa so i can truely see which one is better suited to me but its almost impossible... For instance VW Golf clearly states it has Galvanised body on the spec, but Audi don't list this on the spec sheet so you presuemit isnt' galvanised but apparently according to a Audi forum, it is galvanised and has been for years..

in terms of the resale value, i thik whatcar says the resale on the Golf is 50% back after 3 years and the audi is 53% back after 3 years so the Audi gives you a bit more back but obviously you are paying a bitmore for the car in the first place.

I've never owned a VW or Audi, alwasy had Fords so i have no idea what sort of discount i can expect to get on the VW or Audi, i'm guessing maybe 1k off the price or 10% but i have no idea really.

i'm lookig at hopefully gettig the car later next year, say around next September but will have to see.

I heard the VW Golf wasnt' so comfortabel int he newer version and the Audi Sport edition was comfotable.... as you say need to test dive them and see. i was hoping to hire one of each for a day or so nearer the time to decide but cant' fidn anywhere that has the same model....

i also want oen with white comptuer display as the red on te focus is very bright and you just end up noticing it all the time... my model doesnt' have a way to fade it so it isnt' so bright... i seen teh Audi on the Audi and it looks really nice.

i'm hoping to get the car for aroudn 14-15k not sure if thsi is realistic, accordig to a quick insurance quote on teh Audi, my insurance woudl go up £100 which i didnt' thik was too bad...

    Thans for your replies!

Think carefully about the diesel, nowadays. They are mile munchers really, but the words DMF and DPF send shivers into many diesel owners. Far too many Duel Mass Flywheel (DMF) failures and issues with town drivers in particular getting too many regenerations on Diesel Particulate Filters which hurts economy badly. A duel mass flywheel failure is typically anything from above £750. It is something to be aware of.
