There have been several threads on this recently - the quick answer is yes, but you have to be prepared for one or the other agencies to catch up, so be warned its not as simple as just doing it. It may take a few weeks to sort.

    Other agencies? CSA?
The father has been intouch with the CSA and he was told he didnt need to pay anything as he is in FT HE and has his child 4 times per week. ATM he doesnt receive any benefits but does pay towards the upkeep of his child.

The CSA is quite right he will get a nil assessment. No I was thinking more of tax credits themselves, sometimes depending on who you get on the helpline they are not always aware that you dont have to have one to apply for the other - although in the main they are very good.

Thanks, the mother is in receipt of CB and TC and will just ring to ask the CB to be paid to the father.

Yes it is possible. Normally when a tax credit calim comes through they check child benefit record to ensure the child exists. If there isn't a child benefit record in your name but in your ex partner's then tax credits will write you a letter requesting more info including child's original UK birth cert and probably why you are not claiming child benefit.

There would be no reason for the claim to not go through as long as you provide the info they ask for, it will also take longer than a more straight forward claim, but they can backdate up to 3 months from the date the claim is received if you had entitlement before that date.

    I hope this helps
