  • Thanks for all replies. First thing this morning I got on to Southern Elec and had a chat. It seems somewhere along the line an incorrect meter reading has crept in - our initial reading. Instead of 01195 it was infact 01995. Thats a difference of about 800 units!!!!!!!

So infact things are now cleared up and in 3 months we have used approx £113 of gas, as confirmed by them if we closed our account today and were billed.

They also gave me a formula to use to work out my kwh used.

Units used (on meter since last reading) x 1.02264 x 39 divided by 3.6 = kwh used (then x that figure by unit cost - in my case 3.24p).

For information we use gas purely for heating, water and gas fire. Our cooker is electric and our shower is electric. I expect our electric usage to cost us more monthly, however both gas and electric have now been set at a monthly £40 direct debit.
  • I couldnt resist coming back for another moan. I cant believe in 25 days we have used £85 of gas. I am looking on the bright side - we were both indoors alot over Christmas and the fire was on regularly with the heating on all day some days. So I am looking at this as the worst case scenario and it will be much cheaper from now on. We are both back to work doing normal hours so less heating and less fire usage. The weather has warmed up slightly, here at least, so no need to keep heating on for long periods. I have also reduced heating to 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening and turned the thermostat down. All this should help considerably?

We pay £40/month for gas and have used £85+ this month. That should be easy to claw back the rest of the year when we use very little (only gas usage will be for hot water in the morning/evening)?
