Income Support & JSA

Hi,

Someone I know has a pregnant partner. He is on JSA Income-based and he has been claiming for over 6 months. As far as I know, he has to close his claim to get a joint claim on Income Support. Is my understanding correct or can his partner claim for IS without him losing his entitlement to JSA? Thanks.

She cannot claim income support unless she is sick, disabled or a single parent

Thanks Karen, I'll look into it further; that's what I thought but someone at the JCP told me something on the contrary.

Only one can claim a means tested benefit, either he claims JSA or she claims IS.

    Pregnant women

20160 A woman can get IS if
    1. she is incapable of work by reason of pregnancy or
    2. she is or has been pregnant, but only for the period
2.1 beginning eleven weeks before the EWC and
2.2 ending 15 weeks after the date pregnancy ended.
  • How many weeks pregnant is she?
