Our contents insurance expired about a week ago and we were too busy to renew it. Last night our garage was broken into and a bike stolen.

If the bike was a £100 Halfords type then it might not have been worth claiming anyway. £100 less £50 excess and the insurer gets say a 15% discount with Halfords - the cost to the insurer is £35. You can bet you would pay more than that the following year in increased premiums.
If it was a £500-£2000 high end bike then ouch - you have my sympathies. Have you tried the local 2nd hand bike shops to see if it turns up there? Might be worth putting the word around.0 -
Yeah.. the bike was certainly £500+... graciously they O/H's spare bike and my ancient commuting bike behind

FWIW, the stolen bike is virtually unique in the UK as it never retailed over here.My TV is broken!
