This was raised before, the powers that be deleted the posts telling you how to get rid of the sidebar etc, so this may go the same way now it's been put on the feedback board.
You can block as much or as little as you want using element hider, the only problem I found was that deleting all the header stuff gets rid of the reply count, which I find useful!!
