Night meter active during daytime
I have just checked my meter readings after receiving a much larger than normal bill (no estimates involved). I noticed a huge increase in my night meter reading and the other reading seems a bit high too. I have monitored them for the past day and notice that both are continuing to clock up units during the daytime. I shall now check to see if they are doing the same at night. The meter time display is correct.
Should the night rate meter be clocking up units during the day as well as the day meter?
I have tried contacting British Gas via their website but not had a response yet. However I did discover that the design of the message sending page on their site is awful. After you have sent the message it returns with the original page. I thought therefore the message had gone. However when I received no answer I tried again and found that when the original page is returned after sending that if you scroll down the screen there is a box to tick to confirm the message to be sent. Only when you click this does a mesage go to BG. None of this is visible unless you scroll down the screen. I wonder how many others have tried messaging BG and not had a response because of this.
Thanks in advance to anyone who answers.

No.... Should the night rate meter be clocking up units during the day as well as the day meter?
But be aware that some meters have a third reading which is a cumulative figure of night and day rates."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -

I assume you have a modern or digital meter then as the old mechanical ones required a time-switch to govern the rate switching?
In any case the night rate should only increment in its correct period. Please support my thanks button if I have been of any help

Hi
Ours has been running all hours in the last week (economy 7) and managed to get them out today as an emergency (they took 40 mins to decide on the phone), a chap came within 10 mins and changed our meter (EDF), the earliest they could do was 7th Jan as a non emergency visit.0 -
Thanks to all who answered. I have been in touch with BG who have acknowledged my message but done nothing yet. I am continuing to monitor the meter (a modern one only fitted about a year ago). If any interesting developments I'll post them on here.

Thanks for all the comments. I can now give an update.
BG got back to me on the Friday 7 days after I logged the problem with them. But at least they were helpful. I sent them all the meter readings that I had taken since I noticed the problem - one set for morning and one for last thing at night before turning in for each day. I have continued doing this over the weekend and an extraordinary thing happened. I took a reading just after midnight and the night meter reading had gone DOWN by about 6000 units to a level that was roughly what I expected it should have read. I thought maybe BG had fixed the problem remotely (but then if they could do that why ask for meter readings?). Anyway this morning the readings is back up again about 6000 units to the dodgy readings I had originally complained about. I am now wondering if the night meter only displays the correct reading when it is operating in the night mode.????? Have sent that data to BG too but as it is a weekend I won't know anything until later next week.
I'll keep checking.0
