TESCO problems logging in with Firefox

Options
I always used Firefox and did so when I opened the Tesco account. Now Tesco report that my account is not accessible due to the browser I am using. Does anyone know what this is about? I have tried changing to IE just for this one search but am not getting anywhere.

Just tried it. No probs here !!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • What version are you using?
  • I had trouble during the summer when it took Tesco ages to update their website to allow Firefox 3.5 to be used, so I had to use IE. However since late summer all has been well and 3.5.5. works OK, but I suppose the problem will recur when Firefox 4 is released.
  • If I connect with the current firefox browser (on linux), I get rejected by both natwest and tesco. But you can fiddle with the identity string that the browser sends, to make the site think you are running a different version of firefox, which it accepts. (Of course if something went wrong, bank might assert that you deliberately bypassed their checks and so it was your own fault.)

3.6 Beta 4 I did email Firefox and they replied the same day to say that meny secure sites don't accept beta versions. They say the one I used is pre release. As so many people use secure sites and do their browsing with Firefox why are so many new versions offered? I just wanted to see my current balance to check that some money had arrived.

Must say I am not impressed with Tesco either. I opened accounts in part for the extra points and the fact that EGG had dropped their rate. Also Tesco being instant access. Now Tesco have emailed saying how sorry they are about the points not being awarded. Just can't win.
  • Just called Tesco to report their online banking log-on still not working with full release Firefox v3.6, they acknowledged the issue and said they were still testing compatibility the new version. Quite why it takes so long I have no idea, especially as it worked ok in earlier versions:question: anyway in the meantime will just have to use an alternative browser.

    Usual story.........
Those who upgrade, known as "early adopters" in the jargon get all the aggro.
Those who wait until all the chaos has been sorted out - bug fixed, incompatibilities sorted...etc and THEN upgrade don't get any problems.
In effect the early adopters act as a testing ground for the rest - for free. I know that in this case the product (Firefox) is free but it certainly happens in paid for products as well. Some deliberately use the early adopters as development grounds for a later mass market push.

Using a "beta" version for secure online banking seems rather unwise anyway.

This rule applies to many things, computer program upgrades of all types, new versions of cars, washing machines, airports etc etc (anyone who booked themselves in for a flight via Terminal 5's in it's opening week was nuts: it was bound to be chaos - but they never learn)
In the industrial capital goods environment where it is essential that a purchase "works" anything proffered by a suppliers' sales staff as "new" is regarded with much suspicion....

Your Firefox will pretend it's another version or another browser. Enjoy.

I don't understand why it is taking them so long when it uses the same system as RBS - and their login has worked from day 1 of Firefox 3.6 RTM.
