I wonder if anyone can give me some assistance please.
I am a BT Broadband user and have got the BT Vioyager 2091 Wireless ADSL Router which I have managed to connect and be connected to the internet on my original Compaq Presario computer. I would like to be able to connect my daughters Dell laptop which has a D-Link Air Plus Wireless Cardbus Adapter with it. After this I am stuck as to what to do. BT told me I needed to buy a Wireless USB Network Adapter but not sure what I need to do with any of it.
Sorry if I sound dim but am getting it from all angles from hubby and daughter who think I should know what to do as I rang BT!!
HELP Please anyone

From what you have said, you don't need to buy anything as the laptop has a wireless adaptor included. You have obviously set up the router OK, so now you just need to add the laptop using wireless. If you insert the CD that came with the 2091 there is a user guide that explains what you need to do. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

No, you don't need to buy a wireless USB network adapter. You already have everything you need and the wireless cardbus adapter in the laptop provides wireless connectivity for the laptop to the router.
First of all, make sure that wireless is enabled on the router: on your Compaq computer, open Internet Explorer and click this address ---> http://192.168.1.1 to open the router's configuration pages. Look for wireless settings and make sure wireless access point is enabled. Also, disable any wireless security (WEP/WPA) and enable broadcast of SSID. If at any time the configuration page asks for username and password, use "admin" (without the quotes) for both.
On the laptop, open Control Panel - Network Connections. Does the wireless cardbus adapter show there? (Look in the Device Name column.) What is its Status? (Look in the Status column). If it says Disabled, click its name (probably 'Wireless Network Connection') in the Name column and click 'Enable this network device' under Network Tasks on left hand side.
Click 'View available wireless networks'. Does this show your Voyager 2091 wireless network? If so, click Connect.0 -
Thanks Chippy-Minton.
Have got down to checking the laptop, in the Control Panel there is a Network and Dial Up connections icon and a Wireless Link icon. On selecting the network and dial up option it shows 4 icons titled, Make New connection, Direct Connection, Direct Connection2, and Direct Connection 3, I cant see a Device Name column, Does the above mean anything to you

You need to use the Wireless Link icon, not the dial up one.0

In the Network Connections, click the View menu and then Details. You should now see a Device Name column. You need to configure the Wireless connection - ignore the dial-up connections.cazarol wrote:in the Control Panel there is a Network and Dial Up connections icon and a Wireless Link icon. The wireless cardbus adapter is showing and the device status is that it is working properly. Thank you for your patience but I am struggling now as there is no mention of Network Tasks on the left or View available wireless networks?
Dont think I'm meant to have a wireless connection!0 -
To show Network Tasks do this: in Network Connections, click Tools - Folder Options. On the General tab, make sure 'Show common tasks in folders' is selected and click OK.cazarol wrote:The wireless cardbus adapter is showing and the device status is that it is working properly. You can now click on the words 'Wireless Network Connection' in Network Connections and then Network Tasks on left should show things relevant to that connection. Alternatively, right-click Wireless Network Connection and click View Available Wireless Networks.0
