I have a Direct Debit set up to pay off my Royal Bank of Scotland Platinum card in full every month. I have just found out today that they will only take "payment in full" on a payment date TEN DAYS before the payment is due (e.g., if the statement date says that payment is due by 25th of the month, they will take the DD on the 15th of the month).

Is this standard practice for credit cards?

Not really....Amex for eg will take the dd 7 days before the payment due date while Virgin takes dd on the payment due date. "Payment should reach your a/c by..." line is redundant if you have set up a dd and "....will be taken on .....from designated bank a/c" is more relevant.
  • As others have said, your statement should have specified a date on which RBS intended to debit the money.
I think this is where I feel a bit miffed. The paper statement (which I hadn't opened) had the correct 10-days-before date on it; the online statement (which I had looked at) only had the "due payment date".

I'm going to try complaining and saying that there really should be consistency between the two statements.

I don't have a RBS credit card but have a Tesco one which I think uses the RBS system. If it is the same system then:-

If you go online and select the relevant statement do you see a link that says Download Statement
just below and to the right of the closing balance?
If you click on this you should see a PDF which is an exact copy of your paper statement rather than a summary.
If that is the case the PDF will show the DD date.
