Moving your electric meter
Anyone had any experience of getting an electricity meter relocated? I would like it moved from an internal, to an external wall (about 9 inches).
Turns out all roads lead to EDF / Seeboard who want nearly £700 for the service, (which looks like it involves 4 screws and drill), oh and they can't be sure when it can be done, oh and I have to buy the box as well.
Believing the hype that utility companies were opened up to provide increased customer choice, I asked EDF if anyone, or any other provider can move it at a more competitive price. EDF said yes of course, look at the Lloyds list. Although none of these companies seem to touch domestic installations.
Even after calling a bunch of competing utility companies they say that it has to be done by EDF. So, a monopoly then, funny that... They can charge what they like. Its a disgrace.
If it helps my supply seems to be an old 64amp supply with an old meter, main reason I want it moved is it looks dangerous, especially with kids in the house.
So if anyone knows who else I can get a quote from, or knows utility supplier who will move it if I switch, or has any cunning plan, I would love to hear it!

I think EON can do it from knowing someone who works for them - give them a call unless you haven't already. I think I remember him saying that EON are one of the few that employ people to do things like that0

Nominek,
Here is a couple of previous threads that contain pretty good explanations to your predicament:

I'll try being nice to EON..
Ofgen should be ashamed of themselves...
Thanks all!0 -
Hi nominek
Moving electricity meters is the responsibility of the host distributor for the region.
We will be happy to move your meter if we are the distributor for your region.
However, from your post I suspect you are in the Seeboard region (area 19) where the host distributor is EDF. If this is the case, you will need to contact EDF to arrange a meter move.
Sorry I can't offer a more positive reply nominek.

No they don't, I just had a meter replaced (old age) and it was EDF that came to do the work.
I'm a happy EON customer, just to redress the balance. Never had any issues with them, good customer service and billing and although they are not currently the cheapest, I have decided to stick with them based upon the good experience I have had with them.0 -
Thanks again all, as suspected, a call to EON and a previous post confirm that it has to be your distributor.
EDF should think before advising people about looking elsewhere, its a monopoly - simple as that. I didn't think they were allowed, but there you go.
I'd be interested if EON or any other provider wanted to champion the rights of consumers who want better choice and value for money and lobby the regulator about this?
I'd better start saving then...0 -
Why don't you just box it in and put childproof locking devices on the access door...most folk do this and it's a lot cheaper than moving the cutout and meter outside.0
