House Ins - how to measure if 400m from water

Hiya,

I'm looking at renewing my house insurance using comparison sites and am being asked if the house is within 400m of water. I live near a canal but I dont know how close it is?

Is there a site I can go on to find how close I am? I don't want to give inaccurate info and invalidate the insurance, but I also don't want to pay extra if I don't need to!!!!

Thanks for any advice

  • Hi, I had a similar problem as I am close to a river but not entirely sure how close. Rather than guess and risk being inaccurate I just took quotes from the ones that ask 'has your house ever been flooded'.
Can't remember now which comparison sites did this but if you go to the usual ones you will find this question replaces the 'how close' one.

This will work for you as long as like me you have not ever been flooded.

    Hope this helps!

    Download Google Earth.
    Enter postcode, find house.
Find the ruler tool on the top bar and set it to metres.
Now find nearest watercourse and use the ruler to measure between it and your house.

All free and very easy to use.

    try this:

    http://www.geodistance.com/

you can draw a line (or multiple lines) to measure distance between two points
