Problems getting a C/C

I posted back in January that I was trying to get a card so that I can start repairing my credit history but I'm still having no luck

I recently applied for an Aqua card (Halifax high interest card) and was refused.

What can I do in the meantime? I've ordered a copy of my credit report but need to wait for it to be mailed to me

I've settled all my debts and have the letters to prove it but I'm still having big problems

Is there anyone else I can try?

I've tried Capital One. MBNA and now Aqua

Thx

Have you tried Vanquis? Also have you asked the companies why you've been turend down? They should give you a reason in principle. If it is on credit scoring and your credit file is good, then you can appeal.

By repairing your credit history do you mean that you have any ccj's? If so they will be there for 6 years.
If your own bank won't give you a card then the only alternative is the very high APR cards on offer by Vanquis or Capital One.
If you don't really need a credit card your credit records will be repaired automatically by you paying all of your bills on time.

Why do you need one more card?

I have no CCJ's just payment defaults - basically buried my head in the sand and moved house and didn't tell them I'd moved and they found me so paid up eventually

These are all debts from 2000 as well so no idea when they'll disappear :(

my own bank (Halifax) won't even upgrade me to a current account never mind anything else

I've not seen my report so I don't know if my payments are logged on it as satisfied yet - I should hope so as they were all settled last year

The defaults will affect your credit rating.
They will disappear if you pay them!

So you have paid for the defaulted debts in full? In that case, they should appear on your credit file as satisfied/settled.

What would affect your credit rating is the payment history before you settled the debts: i.e. if it looks something like 000123333330.

    This from the Experian FAQ:

‘Companies may take settled accounts into consideration to see how payments have been made in the past. The status history against a settled account will relate the period before the settlement date. Settled accounts are kept on your report for six years from the settlement date.’

Just because its settled does not mean it doesnt effect you, I had an £800 default from 3 years ago, it is now settled, but still haunts me, cantget a current account had to fight and appeal for the 2 CC's I have and even for car finance,

Bloody nightmare!!! Taught me a valuable lesson though.

Your right, but if they are not marked as settled, you've got no chance.
