Theoretically you can as long as the cheque isn’t crossed.
In practice anti terror/Data protection/child protection/or the sky falling in legislation will be quoted by the bank counter monkey as a reason why you cant.
If you have just about any sort of bank/savings account you can pay it into that, if not you’ll have to send it back to the company and get them to reissue with a different name on it.0 -
Times have changed,
five years my wife and I got a cheque in our joint names and I paid it into my bank account.
The other day, my wife and I got another cheque in our joint names.
So we go to the bank to deposit it in my account.
No can do, it is in joint names, says teller. OK says I, we would like to open a new bank account in joint names.
So we open a joint account, quite easy as we have banked with that bank for years, and paid in the cheque.
Even the teller said it was crazy and a waste of time but that is what they have to do nowadays.

They don't check cheques sent in by post on the whole, only a very small sample, so if someone else pays it into their account, then it will most likely clear. If it doesn't then you can just explain that it was an accident, you sent it in the wrong envelope and get it back.
Discovered this when my boss a while ago sent a cheque made out to 1 supplier to a different supplier and their bank cashed it. Was a bit of a nightmare!0
