Well folks, to my utter amazement i have had a response from BT to my dilemma, i did ask that they post it on the forum but as we thought they would not. This is what they have to say:
Dear Rebecca,
Thank you for your email about the problems that you experienced as a result of a missing payment from March last year.
I have looked into this matter and firstly I would like to say sorry for the length of time that this matter has gone unresolved. I can confirm that I have contacted the Debt collection agency and I have asked for the balance to be returned to BT as I feel that this amount should be zeroed. You will not receive any further letters with regards to the said account. May I also advise that I will credit your current service with 1 month free service as a goodwill gesture. As a result of the credit I can advise that you still have an outstanding balance of £43.68 and I would kindly ask you to clear this balance ASAP as it has explained on the bill that you should have paid this by 02/12/09.
If you need any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me via MSE.
Regards
Rodney

Not much of a compensation prize is it but if it is over i say Thank god for that, but im not 100% convinced only time will tell. I do have to say they have a nerve moaning about a few days late payment when they cant even get it right when it is paid. I do feel that it is not much of an apology after all the worry and grief that i have received and i am also disgusted that not one board member acknowledged my letter to them but hey i suppose i am just another number. I still have some issues that need sorting with BT like the fact that i am stuck with a new contract that i do not want but i will see about that. Thank you all for your support.

If it's sorted then that's good. Any gesture of goodwill is a bonus.
Hopefully it's all sorted.0 -
You need to check your credit rating ASAP. From what you have said, BT have mucked up your credit record with a court ruling. You need to get them to clear this as they have admitted that they have made a mistake.0

The most disappointing thing is that BT company representative did not post a reply in accordance with MSE policy and that they repeatedly breach the new rules with which they are supposed to comply.

Instead, we've asked them to ensure, where possible, that they're posting answers directly on the forum so that everyone can get the benefit rather than just one specific person.
Where people really do need to give them personal details in order to help sort out an issue company representatives can now include a specific help email address in their profile page and can direct people to their profile page from the forum (but not post the address in posts/threads).

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
BT -like any private company- would rather do things their way ie in private.
I've never been comfortable with them being here in any capacity as they can't be trusted. Legally they must look after their shareholders first. This now means they have thrown the vast majority of their customers to the dogs when a problem happens by them.
They should have no facilty to reply IMO as they have their own website and 10,000s of staff. Can MSE forumites go and post on BT's website? No.
I do like the benefit (had it myself) of their help here but looking at the wider picture their postings here are a corruption but if MSE thinks it's a good idea (for MSE or forumites) then they need to be much stricter and not allow BT to parachute into threads stealing customers off other Reps and then saying "Honest, we're only helping, guv".
It's not the fault of the Reps either, it's whomever their team leader is.0
