Problem with router

Hi, I have a netgear mr814v2 router and NTL broadband. All has been working for 6 months but at the weekend I lost internet connection via the router. I have followed advice on the Netgear forums but still not working. I reset the router and managed to get onto the wizard then I updated the firmware (had to do this last time) then after about 5 mins the internet goes off and if I try to restart the router it comes up with no connectivity! Can anyone help please, as you can probably tell I havent got a clue about routers! Thankyou.

Yeh, if u've updated the fimrware you will have most likely lost the ISP information held in the router.
Make sure you choose PPPoE and not PPPoA. In your router config page you should have a 'maintainance' page, select router status:-
Check your WAN IP: If it's 0.0.0.0 then its not connected to NTL.
You may have a release/rener button on that page too. If you get 0.0.0.0 then try release it and renew.
If you still have problems it may be a MAC problem. Do you have firmware v5.3 running?0 -
ok thanks, I'll try and get connected again with the router. Yes I have 5.3.0

ok. I have messed about for the past 2 hours and it seems to have worked! I uninstalled Zone alarm, reset router, upgraded firmware and all seem ok except for one thing!! When I now go into my network I have a thing called Internet Gateway (never seen this before) Is this ok to have? Thankyou.0

The Internet Gateway (Internet Connection) is created by your router. Don't delete it because you'll lose internet access. Any computer with a wired connection to the router can have an Internet Gateway connection and can then enable or disable access to the internet for all computers on that router.0

Thanks for that. One more question, Now I have uninstalled Zone alarm do I need to make sure that Windows firewall is on or can I do without it? Thankyou.0

Re-install Zone Alarm as it is much better than the Windoze one and should not cause you any problems!
