Abbey National won't cancel a cheque

I would recommend paying by paypal in future.
You can do a "chargeback" in such circumstances and get your money back.
I rarely buy items that don't allow payment by paypal.0

Unfortunately it was a bridesmaids dress she was buying so choice was limited and cheque payment was the only option offered by the seller. 0 0

Have you sought advice on the ebay board?
Fraudsters do not usually sell things like bridesmaid's dresses: this sounds more likely to have been some kind of misunderstanding. If the vendor is honest but disorganised you still have a chance of getting your money back.
(Both ebay and paypal will de-register people who don't fill in the right forms at the right times: this could have left your vendor without access to your contact details.)0

I could understand it if the contact details were all held on ebays messaging system but when i posted the cheque i enclosed a note with the ebay item number, name and delivery address. They were contacted a couple of times before the user name was de-registered by ebay and after the cheque had been cashed and didn't bother replying. They did the same to 2 other people for lesser amounts. Hopefully Karma will kick their @55 sometime in the future.0

Then you need to be aware of the risk you/she are taking.
It is very difficult to enforce anything if you pay by cheque, so it's very definitely a risk.0
