Just looked on my account this morning and British Gas took money for my Direct Debit on the 1st Dec as arranged then again on the 2nd Dec leaving me in an unarrange overdraft charge.
I Have had no warning from British Gas was going to happen and so far been told it was a mistake and will resolve its self next month.
I wouldn't mind if I was told even though I'm already £200+ in credit with them since joining 3 months ago and Yes I provide actual readings each month!
Where am i left!

Hi PeterDucket - Complain to your bank immediately about the 2nd Direct Debit - they should immediately credit it back into your account.
In the circumstances the bank may wave the unauthorised overdraft charges, but to get in fast if they don't, WRITE to BG today heading the letter Complaint,( Don't Email or phone), advising them that you are holding them responsible for any charges that may be made by your bank - Plus a cost of £15 for the time up to the date of the letter, you have had to devote to BG and the bank to sort the matter out

I wish you the best of luck trying to resolve your issue! My story just to make you laugh when we were at our last property the electricity meter had to be changed they then stopped billing us for any usage, we rang them around 20 times within the first 3 months they said the account is on hold! 4 years past still no joy! We then moved house gave our forwarding address and final meter reading, when the final bill dropped on the mat I was expecting ££££ (rightfully so) but they had somehow worked out they owed us £400 and a cheque was enclosed i'm at a loss! How they can possibly have worked that out!
anyway best of luck with them!

Contact your bank immediately.
They should refund the unauthorised duplicate payment immediately under the terms of the DD guarantee.
Then tell the bank you want them to raise an indemnity claim in respect of consequential losses (e.g. bank charges). You won't get those back immediately, but will get them back once the Originator pays the paying bank.
Don't be fobbed off, it is the responsibility of the paying bank to raise & pursue the indemity claim on your behalf once requested"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100
