Hi, I think ive just hijacked somebodys thread but Im new to this and couldnt find how to post.
Hope somebody could advise me. My daughter is 21 and for the last year has tried to become a self employed beautician. Unfortunately, business is bad and she cannot now afford to pay the rent of the room meaning that she will have to give up work (only earnt 50.00 last week and her rent was 70.00) would she be entitled to apply for any benefits.
Thanks for any help

If she's available for and looking for work then JSA and housing benefits?0 -
Hi Michelle
Have started a new thread for you so it makes it easier to see

Hi
Thanks for starting the new thread for me. I will get the hang of this yet, cos I aim to be a regular member.
Charlotte is looking for work during her days off but she was worried in case the benefits people say that she gave her work up and not pay her anything, even though she cannot afford to stay at the salon anymore

Is it the rent of the business premises she can't pay, or the rent where she lives?
Does she have her own flat or does she live in the family home?(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Hi
She lives at home with me, its the rent of the room she hires in a hairdressing salon. I have been letting her off with paying "board" at home and help her to pay for products etc but finding it hard myself now.0 -
Ok, so she won't be elegible for any help with her rent as she is living at home with you.
I also don't think people who were formerly self-employed are eligible for Jobseekers' Allowance.
I don't think people under 25 are entitled to Tax Credits either,
unless she has children or a disability.
It may be worth her while to viisit a Benefits Advisor at the CAB to see if she is entitled to anything.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

If she has been paying class 2 NI she would not be entitled to contribution based JSA, but it is the 06/07 and 07/08 tax years they will be looking at.
If she cannot receive conts based JSA she could be able to receive Income based JSA depending on income and capital.0 -
Sorry, im a bit thick here, what is the difference. Unfortunately, she hasnt been paying any ni stamp cos she has a certificate to say she hasnt been earning enough. When she was working at a salon last year it turned out that the salon hadnt put her through the books. It was only when she asked for her pay details because she was having to do jury duty they said they had to let her go, which is why she tried to go self employed due to the fact there was no work.0

Contribution based JSA depends on the NI contributions paid/credited in the 06/07 and 07/08 tax years.
Income based JSA depends on income/capital.0
