Kitchen refit

Options
Just had my kitchen done by son of an acquaintance. Workmanship was excellent. Got a quote in advance for materials and fitting (labour £850)of units, also for laminate floor and fitting (labour £280) which we were happy with.
However he did not give us a price for tiling wall areas. We bought the tiles and adhesive etc. At the end his figure came in at £480 for labour which is proportionally much dearer than his other 2 jobs. He was not an expert tiler and worked very slowly. It's a bit awkward to argue as we just asked him to go ahead anyway but we think this is excessive. He is coming for his money at the weekend. Any opinions?

It depends what sort of area he tiled as to whether the price sounds right or not - but I'd say if you didn't get a price up front, or check that he was an expert tiler, you don't really have much grounds to argue after he's done the work. Unless the work isn't very good, in which case I'd have said something at the time, and asked him to re do it or get someone else to. Are you happy with what he's done?

Good morning: good advice from slass 78;) Always get/give a written quote for all works....it protects both parties.

  • True, but although we asked several times he did not come up with a quote for the tiling.
Yes, I suppose we could have said don't do it then, but by that stage with everything else under way we just wanted to get it done.
I think he has done a reasonable job. There were some quite tricky areas.
I guess we will just pay up!
  • Another point is that it is important to have someone you can trust in your house. ALthough we were mostly at home there were times when we had to be out and we felt, especially with the personal connections that he was trustworthy.
