painting black ash bookcase

I have decided to paint a large, old but perfectly useful black ash bookcase. I shall either end up painting it pale blue or cream and should like advice on how best to go about this please?
Thanks.

I would suggest sanding it down a little, to take some of the 'shine' off the current finish. Then prime it using any suitable primer off the shelf of the DIY store (maybe ask them for a suitable one). I would suggest doing 2 or 3 thin coats. Then paint in your desired colour - again, maybe 2 coats.

If in doubt, test a small area first (underneath a shelf for example) to see if you can achieve the desired result.
  • Paint it with eggshell once you have primed it. It will give a much better finish than gloss

This companies products http://www.international-paints.co.uk/ can be found stacked on all good DIY shop shelves they make a damn fine primer product for this job and if done correct it works really well.

I have scene the result of a friends effort of some childrens furniture and it looked amazing.
