1.4 N Reg Vauxhall Astra won't start!

Hi. I'm having a problem with my housemates Astra. In the last few days, it hasn't started on a morning. The ignition turns over a few times, but after that, nothing happens. It jump-starts fine. Thought it might have something to do with the immobiliser? Its got a Sigma alarm system fitted, which I put into valet mode, hoping it would resolve it, but still nothing. Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks :)

Check HT leads, distributor, battery, alternator, belts etc.

If engine turns over fine especially at the start then HT leads is the place to start bring them in and dry them on the radiator overnight. (Mark them so you know where they go and in what order)

When last did it have a service? Its an old car and will need a bit of TLC especially in the colder/wetter months.
  • cant see it being the immobiliser. how old is the battery if years and years old, more than likely its had its days buy a new battery and rule it out if you get the same after that then have the alternator checked most motor factors will test it free of charge and halfords will but you dont have to buy a battery or alternator from halfords.

I've had lots of experience with bangers in my youth and this sounds like a tired battery for sure. In the old days the local garage would have checked it out free - a very quick google suggests that Kwikfit or Halfords still will.
  • Either a tired battery, or something is draining the battery flat overnight.

Or even an alternator problem. That's why it is worth having it tested if money is tight.

If it is more than 3 or 4 years old it is almost certainly just the battery - especially so as we just had our first frost this week and that always sorts out the iffy batteries.
