Looking for Suggestions - automatic diesel car for high mileage use

At that mileage (presumably lots of motorway driving) I'd be looking at a W211 E-class Merc with the 270CDi or 320CDi engine.
Smooth, refined, comfortable, minimal steering input. Plus their auto gearboxes are renowned for reliability and smoothness.0 -
Why not have a look at the Citroen C5, you can lease one from Lings Cars for less than £300 a month, although that's for 20k miles so you would need to ask them how much for 30k pa.0

Skoda - Octavia or Superb diesel 2 litre 170bhp version with the wonderful DSG auto gear box.
Octavia regulary gave me 50+mpg and if you want more go for the 1.9 or the lower bhp 2 litre.
Taxi drivers swear by the car as do undercover motorway traffic units.
I strongly advise a test drive and then see what comes close for the money. Doubt you will find very much.
Service intervals are variable so the car will tell you when it needs it but from experience you should be able to get 20k+ between services if its all motorway cruising, possibly even 30k.
If you had wanted manual then Mondeo would also be a serious contender (the 57 update version) but Ford autos have never been the best and the VW group DSG gearbox is a dream in terms of smoothness and fuel consumption - it actually gets better economy than the manuals in some vehicles.0 -
I used a VW Jetta pool car for a year with a DSG gearbox and it was a nice comfortable car for crusing, pretty nippy and good on fuel consumption.0

I'd agree with this totally.
Just be aware that dealer servicing for Mercs is extortionate - best to find a good Merc independant to do the work. (from personal experience).Wha's like us - damn few, an' they're a' deid

Cant say that I have ever felt sea sick in mine, in fact as someone who has traded down from premium brands to the C5 then I would say its the most comfortable cosseting car I have owned, and despite the reviews the handling is pretty tidy0 -
One option is my dad's 06 plate Merc E220CDi estate, but despite having a long interval, the cost of the servicing is still potentially horrid, plus I find it wallowly
I don't fancy a Citroen based on owning one a few years ago and bit of trim falling off etc, generally shoddy build quality, and in those days I did very low mileage (6k per year)Dogs have owners...my cat has slaves...0
