Moped/Scooter

  • I would like to add the following, I had three scooters, from 75-125cc. I would avoid yammaha like the plague as I had nothing but bad times with mine. I had two Piaggios, that were absolutly wonderful.

My last scooter was a Piaggio Zip 100cc. It was quite small, very light weight and easy to ride. I would buy another Piaggio again. I also bought my first one from ebay, worked a treat.
Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.

For what it's worth, here's my penny worth.

As mentioned, the bigger cc scooters are worth the extra cash. They are quicker off the line (which is a godsend in traffic) can carry more weight with ease, and don't make you sound like that really ANNOYING ringtone from a few years back. Agreed that the Japanese stuff like Honda is good (had a few of them over the years, and they've been very good). My mate went from Chinese 50 to Honda 125, and he's never been happier. Go for one with decent sized wheels. The difference they make, both to stability, and hitting potholes is incredible.

Re. clothing. At this time of year, think waterproof and warm. Aldi and Lidl do some pretty good stuff for not a lot of cash. Their jackets and trousers are armoured, tough, warm and waterproof. Their boots are pretty supportive too. Don't skimp on gloves. In fact, get a copy of something like Bike or Ride magazines, and look for their best buy winter gloves. Kevlar/leather/goretex mix is probably best. Full leather tends to soak up the rain, and take an eternity to dry out. Wet hands (or feet) are the shortcut to chucking in biking. As far as a helmet goes, a full face helmet is nearly always warmer at this time of year, and a good scarf/snood will seal the gap round your neck. If you can get one with a flip-up front, then it saves taking all the layers off when paying for petrol. Of course, if you want to, places like Maplin sell battery heated waistcoats and the like too.

  • As for the cc - I don't really want a higher cc for him as TBH I don't trust him! He's not always one to pootle (in a car) and I've had enough of bicycle accidents so not keen to see any more accidents with him going even faster! :D

With due respect, don't assume a 50cc is safer than a 125cc just because it can't go as fast.

    1. You can easily get killed at 30mph, 50cc, 125cc or 1300cc!
    2. Cars are more likely to pull out in front of a slow scooter riding in the gutter than one riding assertively with the traffic. It's easy to do that on a 125, not a 50.
    3. If he decides to 'filter', i.e. pass queues of stationary traffic, he will be much safer with the added 'go' a bigger engine gives.

I'd also like to add that DaveMacD's spot on about the clothing - warm and waterproof are absolutely essential and achievable without paying a king's ransom (try 'JTS' for example).
