External Hard Drive

Question for computer experts. Will an external HDD connected via firewire act as quickly as an internal HDD when it comes to file transfers?

sata drive on the left, firewire on the right
  • no. only way to get external as fast as internal (as far as i know) is to use an e-sata connection, but these are uncommon and would require new hardware.

Not too sure what I'm looking at exactly - but the numbers suggest it's significantly slower. Is that correct? It's got to be better than a HDD connected by USB tho'?

No...however firewire is good enough for the intensive video transfers, and normal file transfers are a breeze.

There's a chart here that compares the different buses; Firewire is labelled IEEE 1394a.

This is generally what I want it for. Since getting a Hi def camcorder and a 10MP camera the hard drive is getting filled up at an alarming rate. I didn't fancy fitting a new internal drive but equally I don't want to sit for hours whilst files transfer across!

Wow, according to that chart there's not a lot between USB 2.0 and Firewire. I'm really surprised about that.

I think it's referring to a minor revision of Firewire 400...

There is a distinct difference between USB and firewire speeds - depends what you are looking at. At the top end USB 2.0 High Speed is 480mbps vs. Firewire-800 (1394b) which is 800 mbps. However, in addition to the type of connection the disc speed (get 7200 rpm if possible), cache, etc. also will affect the overall rate of transfer.

In which case probably Firewire or e-Sata (but not usb).
