Radiator Thermostat Help Please

:confused:Hi
I have just had a ew boiler and new thermostats to all of my rads. I have not had them before so I am quite confused. When I put my heating on and the rad in the dining rm is set to 2 the rad gets really hot so I turn it down to 1.5 the rad then goes cold so I then turn it up to 2. This makes it go hot again (really hot) There seems to be no difference in heat between 2 and 5 this also happens to my kitchene no happy one. Should this happen there seems to be no happy medium. When they installed my boiler there is a dial on the front which they turned on full I was told that it controlled how hot the rads felt to the touch bt surely thermostats do this?
I have put the kitchen and dining rm on low as we dont use these rooms often bu cannot seem to get the heat on the rad right.
Could someone please ofer any advise.

I'm sure the bolier temp should not be on full all the time (if thats what you mean)

what temperature does the boiler show ?? should be set to maintain somewhere about 60-62 f

The rads will be hot or cold. As the room gets warm, the valve turns the rad off, and it cools down. The room will then cool down, the valve will open, the rad will warm up, and the process will go on.
So, the room stays at an even temp, but you will notice the rad warming and cooling, not staying lukewarm.
The boiler temperature controls the temperature of the water in the system, I usually leave mine on 4 out of 5, which is just too warm to touch, but ok to leave on if dressed.
  • The thermostats on the radiators (Thermostatic radiator valves or TRV's) are used to regulate the temperature of the room. The dial on the boiler regulates the temp of the water going to the radiators. Do you also have a thermostat somewhere away from the boiler? We have one in our hall, which is the coldest part of our house and it is set to 18 deg C at the moment.

I have the dial on our boiler currently set to 3, but if it's really cold I'll put it up to 5 (max). Likewise , during the warmer months I turn it down to 2 or 1. Our living room radiator is sitting between 2 & 3 at the moment (radiator warm to touch), with kitchen radiator just below 4 (radiator quite hot!). Our bedroom one is set at 1 just to take the chill off the room!

If you put the TRV's to 2 or 3 then initially the radiators may feel hot to touch, but once they sense the air temperature has reached the required setting, will shut off & the radiators will cool down again.

    I hope this helps!

The TRV stat controls the room temp and not the temp of the hot water going into it, you need to allow time for the room to come up to temp for the stat to start to work properly.

  • Take off the lock shield on the other side & close it a little.

Good morning: call your RGI for advice on the use of heating controls...alternatively see here. Where is your room stat?

    Just slightly off topic, but...

    I've asked this before too...

If all of my TVR's are open will I use more gas then having only one or two open, i.e downstairs where I spend most of my time at home?

    Thanks

Thanks for your reply and I have read the article. Just to clarify that I have understood when my heating comes on and the trv is set to two once the rm reaches the required temp the rad will cool down? So why when I turn it to 1 it cools straight away, and at 2 the rad is boiling hot. I have a digital thermostat in my hall and the rad in there has no trv do you think I should turn the dial down on my boiler the one that controls how hot the rad feels to the touch.
    Thanks again

Turn your boiler temp down to a lower setting as already advised. Try two thirds of the way to maximum if it doesn't have an actual temp readout. The handbook supplied with the boiler will advise you of the best setting to use.
This controls the temp of the water leaving the boiler for the CH circuit, it does not control the temp of the rads directly.

It cools straight away because your shutting the valve down to a temperature that the manufacturer has preset it to close at, TRV's will constantly open and close more so in a room that has colder air entering it or people moving around within it. You don't mention what valve type you have but the following is a list of the temp that pegler terrier TRV's are set for, * = frost, 1 = 8 c, 2 = 11 c, 3 = 14 c, 4 = 17 c, 5 = 20 c, 6 = 23 c, 7 = 26 c, max = 28 c, the stat will shut of the rad when the rooms air temp hits the coresponding setting, not when the water temp within the rad gets to the stat setting, rads will heat up and cool down fairly fast and by opening up the valve to a higher temp you are allowing a surge of hotter water in. I would expect a 5-10 degree c drop in temp after about 10 mins of a valve being closed.
One other thing to remember is that radiators heat by convection as well as radiation, cold air being sucked in and up thru the back fins of a modern rad will cool it fairly fast.
