Building wooden steps over uneven concrete ones

Hello,
thought I'll open this up to you guys for some help and guidence. I have just moved into my house and slowly doing it up. There are some steps going into the celler which are concrete, uneven and not in a general good condition. I was thinking of putting some battons on the treads and then wood as the step. Has anyone done this before? And have you any tips? What wood do I use for the tread? It looks straight forward but I'm sure it's harder than it looks. Any advice is warmly welcomed. Unlike my home it's bloody freezing!
Regards
Richard
