Gas Boiler help please ..........

Options
My boiler packed in this morning :(

It's about 15 years old and the last time I had it fixed, the engineer said I was lucky as they have stopped makig parts for it now, but he could still fix it (it was a friend of the family, so he wasn't talkng nonsense, but he's not in Edinburgh anymore)

I guess I am going to have to take the plunge and get a new one

I have searched the threads in this forum and found a few suppliers, but can anyone give me a very rough balll park figure of what I am looking at forking out ?

I need a new gas boiler (not a combi one) that will fit in my kitchen cupboard.

Are we talking £1000 for boiler and installation ? £1500 ? or even more (please no !)

Any help would be great as I am a female on my own with no clue about gas boilers and no helpful male members of my family to ask

I happened to ask this question when I recently had my boiler serviced. These days, all newly installed boilers must be of the condensing type, which are more expensive! The cost of fitting will depend on what you currently have in the way gas pipe size, and pump overrun wiring, and drainage. Yes, condensing boilers require a drain. Most modern boilers require pump overun, if your current boiler does not have this then some extra wiring maybe required. Regarding the gas pipe, apparently they require a 22mm gas feed, you're current boiler is likely to have a 15mm gas feed. Finally, flusing your central heating system is must before fitting a new boiler, failing to do so will invalidate the guarentee. All this will add up to around the £2000 mark, maybe a little less depending on the boiler, etc.

Thanks for that info - both what I did and didn't want to hear.

  • Alison are you sure its packed in? it would be worth paying 50 quid or so for someone to have a look. Im a kitchen fitter and I once has a woman phone and order a new integrated fridge and when I went to replace it the fuse had blown!

Thanks for taking time to reply. It MAY be fixable, but it really is on it's last legs. I was lucky to get another winter out of it. 15 years and creaking more and more each day.

I would almost rather get it done now in the summer, rather than wait for it to break down on Christmas Eve or some other nice time like that and be hit with a huge bill then.

I am not planning to move in the next few years, so I want more than a temporary fix. I know for a fact that they don't make parts for it anymore, so that's a bad sign aswell.

  • ok alison just a thought. I do work for medusa hairdressing in edinburgh and we were doing work in bread street, the plumber there seemed like a good guy and did a good job. So if you are stuck for a plumber, and if you want you can email me and ill try to get his number for you.
