I would definetly apply for DLA, my nephew has ADHD also and is on ritalin
and gets DLA middle rate care and low rate mobility. You have nothing to lose by applying.

(PDF file) Guide to Claiming DLA for children under 16 with brain related conditions
this link from Fran's *USEFUL LINKS* sticky above should help with the form if your local Welfare Rights Provider isn't able to help.
Get the form ASP FROM DWP -Benefit Enquiry Line
and ask for a DWP - Carers Allowance claim form as well.

A search of medicines.org.uk shows several forms of Omega 3 are prescribable for kids so it may be worth asking if you can get it on prescriptions, the phrase "my Dr has also asked that i put my son on fish oils" makes me think that he's expecting you to buy them.
If this is the case may I suggest you use Zipvit Omega Juice as this provides 1.5g of EPA+DHA in 5ml. Tastes a bit so you may need to resort to bribery but at 8p a day it's best value for money.
Remember the effective dose requires a minimum of 550mg EPA so use less and the benefits will take much longer or be imperceptible.

Have just spoke with somebody from benefits about carers allowance and she has told me that as from April they are now asking that you post carers forms as and when you have decicision from DLA she also said that the amount is £46 but as i'm on income support this will be deducted from my benefits but then i can claim something else i forgot what she said and this would be £26 so still worth claiming, both forms are in the post so i'm now off to read up as much info as possible this money would be a godsend to me especially as at the moment i have been spending a fortune on eye q tablets for him but i will definitely be looking into zipvit omega juice as it is much cheaper. thanks
  • ADHD is classed as a Disability so there fore you can put in for carers allowence and Disability Living allowence.

Will your doctor not prescribe the fish oil? I presume you get free prescriptions.

Some GPs have been prescribing them, some don't but worth asking.

The £26 is the premium for being a carer, not too complicated, basically Carers Allowance is means tested but you are allowed an allowance on your IS for being a carer. Also there are premiums for having a child on DLA for income support.

With the Ritalin, I know many children who only take it day time, say morning and lunch time, and not on a night time, which helps with the sleep.

Welfare Rights or a local Carers Support cenre should be able to help you with the DLA forms.
One day I might be more organised...........
