Hi there all
My OH has high cholestrol, but Ive decided Im gonna do him steak & chips etc for his tea tonight.
I want it to be LOVELY, but yes, he has high cholestrol.
I just dont rate oven chips, which is why we simply have stopped having them they taste so dry & powdery.
Can anyone recommend chips (not wedges, or anything like that) that will work? Or if theres any decent oven chips out there, do suggest them. I knopw they are not partic OS, but baffled as to what to do for chips!!

Hi there, my OH has to have chips with practically every meal I'm afraid and his favourite oven ones are Auntie Bessies. On the real chips front why don't you try making them with olive oil. They do this is Greece all the time and i think they are yummy and must be better from the health side of things. Hope this helps!0

I'm trying to diet at the moment so make my own chips for the oven - cut potatoes into chunky chips or wedges.
Hot oven about 200 degrees - Give a baking sheet either very light coating of olive oil or sunflower oil. (I use the spray oil which is recommended by WW)
Parboil chips in boiling water for about 5 mins just to get them started. Drain well, (pat dry in a clean tea towel if possible) then place onto the hot tray and shake around to get them a light covering of oil . cook in the oven until golden > usually about 20 mins turning once or twice to get an even brown. If using the spray oil then you can give them an addtional blast mid way through cooking to prevent them sticking. These are delicious sprinkled with cajun seasoning before putting into the oven.
Made myself hungry now !0 -
Why dont you make your own oven chips.
Cut potatoes into 'chip' shape, par boil, coat in olive oil & bake for 30mins to get them nice and crispy.
Although I suppose they could be called 'chip shaped wedges'?
Or why dont you just do him real chips - surely a treat doesn't hurt once in a while?Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...0 -
After I've cut my chips to bake in oven, I always soak them in cold water for a few mins, I cant remember where I got this advice from, but they always seem to have a better texture to them. I use either olive or sunflower oil, just brush the tray and brush the chips, doesnt use up too much oil.
I just fancy some chips now, might have to change the menu for tonight

SW chips are good too - cut potatoes into chips, parboil and drain well. Put back into the pan and shake them - this roughs up the edges and helps to brown them. Put on non-stick tray, spray with sprayoil and shake them around. Then put in hot oven for about 20mins - or longer if you like them brown. Spray them more if necessary.
My OH loves chips and has a high cholesteral level and will eat SW chips, he says nothing really compares to the real ones, but if it's for health reasons, then I suppose you have to do your best to find alternative ways of cooking them.
Make sure that the potatoes are best for roasting/chipping too. If you get the wrong ones then they don't taste right at all."It is always the best policy to speak the truth-unless, of course, you are an exceptionally good liar." - Jerome K Jerome0 -
Another way to get a good texture on the chips is to drain the pain after par-boiling and then give them a good shake (with the lid on) to bash them about a bit, you can put the oil in the pan at the same time if you like and do the coating at the same time. I also sprinkle a little paprika on mine before putting them in the oven.0

Chips cooked in vegetable oil (the olive oil suggestion is excellent) do not contain cholesterol - because potatoes don't.
It's the chips we buy in fast food outlets that are cooked in animal fat, and therefore their cholesterol content soars. I have read that some chains use beef fat and others pig fat! Yuck!Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
I've never owned a chip pan, never made 'real' chips and I detest oven chips but I do the oven roasted chips as described abouve and they are lovely! I wouldn't dream of spoiling a steak with oven chips, believe me, these roasted ones are beautiful with steak and pepper sauce
I sometimes do them with a roast chicken instead of roast potatoes. It's funny because even though they're essentially the same thing, it feels much more relaxed having 'chips' instead of roasties. Mmmmmmmm... with lots of 'real' gravy on
I find that it's better to do them for slightly longer on a lower heat to get them nice and evenly golden.
Ooooh....yum!Just run, run and keep on running!0 -
YUM loads of great ideas here
Alas though, Ive actually made the cardinal OS sin of buying "frozen frying chips" and Im going to fry them, in a pan.
And hopefully OH will be alive to tell the tale of how much he loved them.
