Good reliable laptop

Hi all,

I did have a look at the poll at the top of this forum re The Great 'Cheapest Decent Laptop' Hunt but woundered if I could get a few personal views.

I'm a mac man but find myself needing a pc laptop. I know sod all about pcs. Was about to check out Dell but have been warned off them by a friend as being unreliable.

Any thoughts on a reliable mid priced laptop?

Thanks in advance,

Jamie

Every view is personal, some based on a lot more information than others.

My opinion is based on the fact that I purchased probably 20 laptops over a period of 3 years or so from Dell.

These laptops did very different jobs, some being carried all around the world, some with very errrr "clumsy" users........

My conclusion is that they were very very reliable, and rarely failed, even with heavy use. Of course the mark of a good company is how quickly things that go wrong are fixed. In this respect, with a decent warranty, Dell managed to fix all issues we had with the minimum of fuss.

So, my recommendation is with Dell, plus a good on-site warranty. My secondary recommendation is to stick with big names whenever you buy a laptop. These include (but are not limited to) Sony, HP, Toshiba, Acer.....

    Good luck with your purchase.

    * Just to enhance this post, I also purchased upwards of 150 desktop PC`s, and 25 odd servers from Dell, again, reliabilty was good, I lost a few PC`s with faulty Hard Disks (hardly a Dell problem), and only one server in 6 years ever had a hardware failure, they even phoned me up to insist on updates to some servers to avoid hardware problems. Cant say fairer than that!

im a student and have a sony vaio FS315B... the FS series in my experience are very reliable, and its a greta piece of kit

the biggest plus is that my DVD writer stopped working 2 days before christmas... Sony collected it Christmas Eve, and it was back on 28th December... now thats good service... ohh, they even phoned a week after it was returned to check it was working. To me good customer service was a big plus.. and your friend is right, Dell are unreliable.

I have a Dell Dimension 6100 and it's been fine, about a year old, no complaints, I also have a slightly more sturdy Dell for business, supplied by my company, which is very good, both have good battery life, good wireless built in, nice touch pads. Rubbish sound on the 6100 but it was only £450 a year ago and bought for web browsing anyway.

About to buy over 2000 Dell PCs and Laptops so I am pretty sure of their quality overall ;)

    Dell are fine.
I work in IT for a local authority who use a lot of laptops. They are all Dell, and have been for many years. For users such as ourselves the reliability is far more important than initial purchase price, and we'd stop using them if they weren't reliable.
