I've been in roughly the same position, and I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised to find that my old employer has re-invented the wheel and/or my old job in the meantime.

The question is simple; does your wife really, really, really want her old job back with a firm that could do this to anyone, either by accident (ie. they're idiots) or design (ie. they're b*t*rds).

My advice is to take the money and run. The professional job market is on the up again at the moment, as the more switched-on firms are starting to recruit the best of the crop in advance of the competition.

Things always work out for the best in the long term (although it may not necessarily seem like this in the short term).
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

My advice would be take the money and run, to a tribunal, and then get a few more grand.
